Abstract

PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

“Is That a Fried Egg Flower?”

… the passerby asked — thereby reducing my pride and joy to the level of … a breakfast ingredient!

On some research, though, I find that ‘Fried Egg Plant’ is, in fact, one of its common names. How lowering! I’d rather call it Romneya coulteri, or California poppy tree.

It’s really coming into its own, now — to the extent that passersby stop and make comments about it (!)

While looking up ‘Fried Egg Flower’ I discovered that July 4th (on the National Days calendar) is also ‘Sidewalk Egg Frying Day’. How about that then!

Talking of the date — Happy Fourth of July!!! Wishing you all every fab thing!

Back to fried eggs — they should just be on a plate and nowhere near the name of a flower! (still chuntering about anyone saying my poppy tree should be called a fried eggplant)

The lavender is out everywhere. I love the smell, and the bees, although not at the same time. I don’t want a bee up my nose.

That tree at the back is in my neighbour’s garden. It is covered in apples. Looks like a bumper crop. Another one.

I am exceedingly ungrateful about such a fruitful harvest because although freely given, the apples fall into my garden — and no doubt other people’s gardens, too, and rot and are full of worms and wasps and taste horrible anyway. (Hehe — just made myself laugh — being curmudgeonly is SUCH hard work!)

The honeysuckle is glorious. It’s got into its stride. It’s rioting, in fact. Rioting honeysuckle. Wonderful!

Next door (outside the front of the house) has this enormous bush of yellow roses. They look amazing. I’m always disappointed they have no fragrance. However, if they did, the bush is so huge, the avalanche of smell would knock passersby out, so maybe it’s as well.

While on the National Days calendar I noticed that July 5th is ‘National Workaholics Day’. Doggo here is a workaholic, but, as with many writers, he gets too wrapped up in his research to actually get his words down. I know the feeling!

The Photo-A-Day Challenge is a great thing to do. It’s really interesting to see other people’s lives, from all around the world, illustrated through their pics.

It was Dennett’s idea — what a great idea!
