Summary

Susan Alison shares her experiences with new growth in her garden, reflects on the Trooping of the Colour ceremony, and discusses the challenges of urban gardening and the impact of vehicle parking on pedestrian spaces, all within the context of her Photo-A-Day Challenge.

Abstract

The website content is a personal blog entry by Susan Alison, detailing her observations and activities in June 2021. She marvels at the new growth of a fern in her garden, which displays autumnal colors contrary to the usual seasonal indicators. Alison also anticipates the Trooping of the Colour ceremony, a traditional British event marking the monarch's official birthday, and humorously contrasts it with her dog's eagerness for a walk. She comments on the vibrant red peonies next door, which her dog Jack finds objectionable, and notes the flourishing valerian in the neighborhood. Urban gardening challenges are highlighted, particularly the issue of parked vehicles obstructing pedestrian pathways, leading to damaged wing mirrors. Alison's eucalyptus tree, which has outgrown its intended bonsai-like containment, presents a dilemma due to potential impacts on house foundations. The entry concludes with Alison expressing gratitude for the Photo-A-Day Challenge, which she participates in, and credits Dennett for initiating it in July 2020.

Opinions

  • Alison appreciates the beauty and unconventional growth patterns of her garden plants, particularly the fern's autumnal colors in spring.
  • She views the Trooping of the Colour ceremony with a mix of reverence and humor, juxtaposing it with her dog's simple desire for a walk.
  • Alison finds the peonies' vibrant red color and petal abundance to be a source of amusement due to her dog's negative reaction.
  • She is amused by the unintended growth of her eucalyptus tree, which defied her attempts to keep it small.
  • Alison expresses concern about the practicalities of urban living, such as the narrow streets designed for carriages, now crowded with modern vehicles, leading to compromises in pedestrian accessibility.
  • She shows a sense of community and environmental awareness by being cautious about planting trees that could disrupt house foundations.
  • Alison values the Photo-A-Day Challenge as a way to connect with others and share life's moments through photography.

PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

Trooping the Colour? When’s my Walk?

June 2021 days

The fern (above) has long grown in one of the pots I have outside the front of my house. These colours usually indicate autumn to us, but this fern has it the other way around, and they indicate new growth with those wonderful russet hues.

Painting of the Trooping of the Colour by Susan Alison

I’m getting ahead of myself now — I have to get enough work done to cover a couple of weeks because I have a visitor coming to stay next week — my first since February 2020.

June 12th is the Trooping of the Colour — a ceremony that has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for over 260 years.

Doggo has something to say about this: ‘Trooping the colour around there, and then trooping the colour around here, and trooping the colour around there as well — what I wanna know is when’s my walk???’

Jack’s taken exception to the peonies next door. Maybe they’re too red, or too petally, or they’re looking at him funny. Whenever we come out of our front door, he feels obliged to tell them off.

Valerian is flowering in the gardens now — here’s a handy vista of white, pink and red valerian in one place. Jack didn’t bark at them — he must have approved of the colour scheme.

Photo of a wing mirror cover by Susan Alison

This is a wing mirror cover sitting on my front garden wall. This is a common sight around here because the streets are so narrow — they were originally laid out to cater for Victorian carriages and pedestrians, not socking great RVs and 4x4s two centuries later.

This leads to vehicles being parked on pavements so there is enough room for emergency vehicles and trash-trucks and other deliveries to get through — but then, of course, pedestrians, prams, wheelchairs, etc. are obstructed instead.

It also leads to wing mirror covers being knocked off by passing traffic.

Photo of eucalyptus tree in a pot by Susan Alison

A few years ago I planted a eucalyptus tree in a heavy pot.

I had in mind that putting it in a pot like that would sort of bonsai it a bit and prevent it from growing too big.

Well — that didn’t work!

Actually, this pic is a bit confusing — the eucalyptus is growing from the pot that’s on the ground, not the one on the wall — and the top of it is the highest thing you can see.

It’s a shame that the pic doesn’t show that all the new growth at the top is pink. It looks fab!

Anyway, I’m in a bit of a quandary about this tree, now. I like it, but it seems to mean to keep it in a pot. I can’t plant it out, though, because we’re very careful about what we plant for fear of disturbing the foundations of the houses. Several trees have had to be taken out completely in the time I’ve been here, having caused huge problems and then the householder having to underpin their house at vast expense. Yeah — I don’t fancy that!

The Photo-A-Day Challenge is a fab thing to do. It’s fascinating to see other people’s lives, from all around the world, illustrated through their pics.

Dennett started it in July 2020 and what a fab idea that was! Thank you, Dennett!
