Is it Weird That I Listen To Foreign Music?

When this thought first popped into my mind, I thought I was weird.

Yes, indeed. Why would anyone else listen to songs that are delivered in a language that they don’t understand?

Isn’t that a funny phenomenon and what practicality does it serve?

And then I have a moment of epiphany.

It is not about understanding what that song is about, or who the singer is.

Of course, it has nothing to do with the attractiveness of the singers neither.

I listen, not watch.

So the correct interpretation has something apart from the song per se.

I examined my YouTube and Spotify history and realised a few things.

Firstly, if ever there are foreign songs in my playlist, I repeatedly hit on the “play” button many times a day, many days a week.

And when I look at the time in which they are played, they coincide with my working time.

That brings me to a conclusion that the foreign music I listen to has an inkling with my work.

And indeed, it has.

It is necessary for me to isolate myself from distractions coming from the immediate surroundings such as colleagues and their chatter in order to focus on my work.

Yet at the same time, that cannot be done without drowning out the noise that is prevalent in the background.

The only way is to get the ears to listen to something else.

Plugging in is a good option to pull myself out of the background chatter.

I would be equally distracted if I were to listen to songs that are delivered in languages that I can understand.

So, that creates another problem to solve.

I can be distracted by the playlist of songs that I am listening to, instead of focusing on the tasks at hand.

Listening to foreign music solves the problem.

In fact, it solves many problems.

First, I get to disengage from the endless chatter in the background.

Next, I do not distract myself by listening to the songs because I cannot understand the language anyway.

Lastly, I get some form of entertainment in terms of music.

Give it a try, it works.

Oh, one reminder.

If you are listening to music while you are working, choose songs that have a high tempo.

It keeps the mind at a fast pace.

Happy listening!
