Summary

The undefined website announces the Smillew Writers Challenge, an open call for humorous fiction or non-fiction pieces on life, undies, mud, and a meta category, with winners selected by public clappers and contributing to charities.

Abstract

The Smillew Writers Challenge is introduced as a successor to the Medium Writers Challenge, inviting writers to engage in a new competition with a humorous twist. Participants are encouraged to write on one of four prompts: life, undies, mud, or a free-for-all meta category. Submissions must be published in MuddyUm and can range from fiction to non-fiction, provided they are humorous. Entries will be judged by the public through 'clappers,' with the most engaging story for each prompt determining the winners. Unlike traditional contests, there are no material prizes; instead, the winners will select charities to receive donations from the challenge's earnings and a portion of the host's Medium Writers Challenge prize money. The challenge is open until September 21, 2021, or until the Medium Writers Challenge results are announced, which has been postponed to early October.

Opinions

  • The author of the challenge emphasizes the importance of humor in writing, suggesting it as a way to balance the more serious nature of some Medium content.
  • The challenge is presented as a response to the restrictive guidelines of the Medium Writers Challenge, offering participants greater freedom in their writing.
  • The author playfully notes their personal connection to the 'undies' prompt, hinting at a past experience with competitive underwear throwing.
  • The challenge seems to prioritize community and charity over individual reward, as evidenced by the lack of personal gain for winners and the focus on contributing to good causes.
  • The author commits to reading all entries and has set up a system for writers to join MuddyUm and submit their work.
  • The author expresses a preference for the 'Space' entry among their Medium Writers Challenge submissions, possibly indicating a personal connection or satisfaction with that piece.

Introducing The Smillew Writers Challenge

Nothing to win, nothing to lose

So, Medium Writers Challenge is over, and life is boring again.

I’m here to help.

Welcome to the Smillew Writers Challenge

Entering the challenge is easy. Let me quote Medium Writers Challenge here: “Just write to one — or more — of the writing prompts outlined below, and include the associated tag when publishing your story on Medium.”

LIFE

Death is nice and all, but I thought it wasn’t super positive on Medium’s side to give it as a prompt. So to rebalance the writing universe, here’s the life prompt.

Tell us something about life

UNDIES

Some of you might know I once threw undies competitively. That’s why the topic is close to my heart. Whether you’re wearing some or not, undies are everywhere in our lives. They’re in our drawers, under the bed, in the washing machine, or on our heads if we want to look funny.

Tell us about your undies.

MUD

Remember the delicious mud cakes you pretended to eat when you were a child? What about this mud stain you got when riding your bike last week? Did you take a mud bath recently?

So many possibilities to get dirty.

Tell us something muddy.

META

Anything goes here. That’s the category anyone can enter with any piece of writing. After the restrictive guidelines of the Medium Writers Challenge, we need freedom. Here you go.

Tell us something.

  • No minimum or maximum word count.
  • Entries are to be published before 11:59:59PM ET — September 21, 2021.
  • The four winners will be announced a few days after MWC results are known. Somewhere around September 21, 2021 — according to MWC challenge rules.
  • Update! Medium postponed the results reveal to early October. As long as the MWC results will remain unknown, the SWC will be open for entries.

Any questions? Shoot them in the comments.

How do you win?

The public is the only judge. The story with the most clappers wins. Clappers, not claps. If several stories have the same number of clappers, I get to decide.

What can you win?

Nothing!

But you can help a good cause.

The winner of each prompt gets to choose a charity to which I will equally contribute.

My total contribution will be equal to the sum of:

  • All the proceeds from this article till end of the challenge — after tax and a processing fee of 10%,
  • 10% of all my prize money from the MWC.

Should I not win Medium Writers Challenge — it would be strange — I commit to give at least $10 to each of the chosen charities.

Best of luck to all the participants.

Would you like to read my entries in the MWC?

Here you go.
