The sun is rising as you crest the hill. A great lake sits ahead, mountains all around.
Your new armor weighs you down, but you’re glad of it, and the beautiful ornate shield. The area is infamous for monsters.
A place where heroes secure their fame. Heroes like you, perhaps.
You glance back down the trail. The child Angelika is trailing behind, and you wait for a moment. She’s panting. “D’you really think we can save my father from the demon?” she asks, after catching her breath.
“I’ll do my best,” you vow. “But we need to find its weaknesses.”
She takes a drink. She carries her own backpack, and you’re struck by how small she is. She should be at home, safe with her family. Now, it’s down to you to take care of her.
You look at the lake. “Finnart lives here?”
She points at caves near the head of the lake. “There,” she says. “Somewhere. I don’t know which cave.”
The girl’s father was travelling with one of the fish-like locathah people. They’re a dangerous bunch, aggressive and touchy.
But perhaps with the child, you can get the information you need.
“Let’s find out,” you say.
