Hello, writers and readers.

As media coordinator of the ILLUMINATION Integrated Publications, today, I created a video introducing our new Discord network. I hope you will enjoy this YouTube video. For those who don’t have access to YouTube, I provide the transcript below.

Transcript of the Video

I have some exciting news for you. In addition to our Slack workspace, Illumination now has its own Discord server. I created this server for those who use Discord in addition to Slack, as well as for those who either don’t have access to Slack or just don’t want to use it.

Before I get ahead of myself, let me introduce Discord to those who haven’t heard of it. Discord is like a social hub for many different types of communities. Think of it as an informal version of Slack. Each Discord server usually has text channels for chatting and voice channels for talking.

These servers can be customized with custom emojis, member roles, and themes. Although Discord is generally used by gamers, it is also used by people with all sorts of interests. You can find servers dedicated to pretty much any of your interests. It’s a great way to share your passion or learn new things.

Now, let’s get back on track. The purpose of the Illumination Discord server is to be an alternative to our Slack workspace. You’re free to choose which platform you want to join, whether it’s Slack, Discord, or even both.

Now, just like our Slack workspace, there have to be some rules in place. Anyone who joins the server must act ethically and with common sense. You should treat other members how you want to be treated. Respecting the privacy and opinions of other people is crucial.

We don’t allow harassment, hate speech, discrimination, and toxic behavior on this server. Our members want to have secure, joyful, and pleasant conversations. Our Discord server is unlike other social media platforms. It is managed privately, and we have the right to choose our members.

If you observe or experience toxic behavior in our Discord server, you can contact me or one of our moderators in my absence. Those who breach the code of conduct will be banned from the server.

However, now and then, conflicts may arise. We are all humans. Mistakes and misunderstandings can happen. We address any issues case by case. Please always give the benefit of the doubt until a matter is understood clearly and resolved amicably by our moderation team.

Now, let me provide a bit of an introduction to the various different channels in this Discord server. We have a bunch of different text and voice channels that serve different purposes.

The first category is called “Newcomers.” This is the first section you should read before anything else. The “welcome” channel is just a static message to new members who join the server. The “rules” channel will include the code of conduct for the Illumination Discord server, which you must follow to continue using this service.

The “introductions” channel is a space for newcomers to introduce themselves to existing members. Your introduction can be as short or as long as you want.

The second category is called “Publications.” This is an area for general chat relating to Illumination Publications. The “general-chat” channel is a space to talk about general topics relating to Illumination. The “social-conversations” channel is a great space to discuss anything outside of the world of Medium.

This can include your personal life and interests. For example, you can include highlights of your daily activities, including any interesting news, birthdays, graduation, and achievement. The “share-your-stories” channel is a space to, as the name implies, share your Medium stories with whoever might want to read them. The “publication-inquiries” channel is a space to cover any questions about our publications.

The third category is called “Videos & Podcasts.” This is an area for discussion relating to the Illumination Videos & Podcasts Publication. The “videos-podcasts-chat” channel is a space to talk about anything relating to videos and/or podcasts.

The “share-your-stories” channel is a space to share your stories that relate to videos & podcasts. The “share-videos-podcasts” channel is a space to share content you may have found interesting or content you believe others will enjoy.

The fourth category is called “Gaming.” This is an area for discussion relating to Illumination Gaming and other gaming topics. The “gamers-chat” channel is a space to talk about anything relating to gaming.

The “share-your-stories” channel is a space to share your stories that relate to gaming. The “gaming-clips” channel is a space to share funny or interesting gaming clips and videos. These would even be your own clips.

The last category is called “Voice Channels.” This is simply a few public voice chats. The “Public Hangout” voice channels are accessible to anyone who joins the server. The “The Round Table” voice channel is specifically a space for moderators and myself. Although you might not have permission to join this channel, I or another moderator can drag you into this channel if needed.

Now, for those who aren’t familiar with how voice channels work, here’s an explanation. Although it’s not necessary to use the voice channels to connect with fellow writers and readers, they can be useful for those who prefer to speak instead of type.

To use the voice channels, all you have to do is click on the channel you wish to join, and you’ll be connected. If you want to mute/unmute or deafen/undeafen yourself, you can simply click on the microphone or headphones symbols on the bottom left.

In the case that you can’t hear others or others can’t hear you, all you have to do is click on the cog symbol next to the headphones symbol to open your settings. From there, navigate to the “Voice & Video” section under “App Settings.” After you have navigated to “Voice & Video,” all you have to do is make sure your “Input Device” and your “Output Device” are correctly selected.

Additionally, if you would like to chat with someone face-to-face, you can turn on your webcam by pressing the camera symbol on the bottom left. You can also share your screen with whoever is in the voice call with you. To do this, just click on the monitor symbol again on the bottom left.

And that’s about it. If you would like an invitation to the server, visit my original post on Medium, which will be linked in the description. From there, just leave a comment asking to be invited. I will send you a private message with the link. If you use Slack and also want to join Discord, you can click on the pinned message in the social conversations channel in the Illumination Slack workspace. We look forward to you joining our Discord server and benefiting from it.

Stay safe, and have a good one.
