Communicate and Collaborate with Writers on the Illumination Discord Server

Welcome to our new workspace in addition to Slack for those who need another cool tool

Hello, fellow writers and readers of Illumination. Firstly, Happy November!

As a volunteer media coordinator of ILLUMINATION Integrated publications on Medium, I whipped up a fresh Discord server as a backup for our main Slack workspace.

A bunch of our writers can’t access our Slack workspace because of their limitations, but they’re all about Discord, which they find cool and handy.

So, I raised my hand and said, “I got this!” and put together a server for the gang. This made our chief editor Dr Mehmet Yildiz, happy as he had many inquiries about using Discord to communicate and collaborate with writers better.

For those who are unfamiliar, first, let me introduce Discord briefly.

What is Discord?

Discord is like the cool hangout spot on the internet where you can chat, voice call, and play games with your friends and communities. It’s not just a chat app; it’s more like a social hub for gamers and all sorts of communities.

Imagine if Skype, Slack, and a gamer’s dream came together — that’s Discord. You create a server, which is like your own little club, and invite your friends to join.

Each server has text channels for chatting and voice channels for talking. You can customize your server with emojis, roles, and themes. It’s like throwing a virtual party in your backyard.

One of the best things about Discord is that it’s not just for gaming. People use it for all sorts of interests — from art and music to study groups and fan clubs. You can find servers dedicated to your favorite games, TV shows, or hobbies and connect with like-minded folks. It’s a great way to share your passion or learn new things.

And let’s not forget the bots — these little automated helpers can do all sorts of things on your server, from playing music to moderating chat and much more. They add a fun and functional element to your Discord experience.

So, in a nutshell, Discord is the ultimate online hangout where you can chill, chat, game, and connect with people who share your interests. It’s the place to be if you’re looking for a great online community experience. Give it a try, and you might just find your virtual home away from home!

Purpose of the Illumination Discord Server

So, we’ve got this cool Discord server that we’re rolling out as a spiffy alternative to our trusty old Slack workspace. You know, for those of you who can’t get your hands on Slack or maybe you’re just not feeling it, Discord is the name of the game.

In simpler terms, we’re basically saying, “Hey, if you’re not a Slack fan or can’t hop on the Slack train, don’t worry! We’ve got a super chill Discord server ready for you to join instead.”

So, feel free to take your pick, Slack or Discord, and let’s get this party started. We’re all about giving you options and making sure you have a great time communicating with us. Join us in whichever corner of the internet you prefer!

Rules and Tips for the Illumination Discord Server

Since this Discord server is an online space for our community, there have to be at least a few simple rules in place so that the server doesn't explode into complete chaos.

These rules are also posted in one of the text channels on the server. So please make sure you read them.

A Discord workspace is a social platform; therefore, we need to act ethically and with common sense. The golden rule is to treat other members as you want to be treated. Respecting the privacy and opinions of other people is crucial.

We don’t allow harassment, hate speech, discrimination, and toxic behavior on this server. Our members want to have secure, joyful, and pleasant conversations. Our Discord server is unlike other social media platforms. It is managed privately, and we have the right to choose our members.

If you observe or experience toxic behavior in our Discord server, please contact me directly or contact our moderators in my absence. As a last resort you can always contact our chief editor Dr Mehmet Yildiz as he knows other moderators.

Those who breach the code of conduct will be banned from the server. However, now and then, conflicts may arise. We are all humans. Mistakes and misunderstandings can happen. We address any issues case by case.

Please always give the benefit of the doubt until a matter is understood clearly and resolved amicably by our moderation team.

Introduction to Illumination Discord Channels

We have a bunch of different text channels in our Discord server which serve different purposes. I will introduce each category briefly below:

The “Newcomers” category is the first section you should read before anything else.

The “welcome” channel is just a static message to new members who join the server.

The “rules” channel will include the code of conduct for the Illumination Discord server, which you must follow to continue using this service.

The “introductions” channel is a space for newcomers to introduce themselves to existing members. Your introduction can be as short or as long as you want.

The “Publications” category is an area for general chat relating to Illumination Publications.

The “general-chat” channel is a space to talk about general topics relating to Illumination.

The “social-conversations” channel is a great space to discuss anything outside of the world of Medium. This can include your personal life and interests. For example you can include highlights of your daily activities inluding any interesting news, birthdays, graduation, and achievement.

The “share-your-stories” channel is a space to, as the name implies, share your Medium stories with whoever might want to read them.

The “publication-inquiries” channel is a space to cover any questions about our publications.

The “Videos & Podcasts” category is an area for discussion relating to the Illumination Videos & Podcasts Publication.

The “videos-podcasts-chat” channel is a space to talk about anything relating to videos and/or podcasts.

The “share-your-stories” channel is a space to share your stories that relate to videos & podcasts.

The “share-videos-podcasts” channel is a space to share content you may have found interesting or content you believe others will enjoy.

The “Gaming” category is an area for discussion relating to the Illumination Gaming and other gaming topics.

The “gamers-chat” channel is a space to talk about anything relating to gaming.

The “share-your-stories” channel is a space to share your stories that relate to gaming.

The “gaming-clips” channel is a space to share funny or interesting gaming clips and videos. These would even be your own clips.

The “Voice Channels” category is simply a few public voice chats.

The “Public Hangout” voice channels are accessible to anyone who joins the server.

The “The Round Table” voice channel is specifically a space for moderators and myself. Although you might not have permission to join this channel, I or another moderator can drag you into this channel if needed.

How to Use the Voice Channels Individually or as a Group

Image designed by Aiden (Illumination Gaming)

Although it’s not necessary to use the voice channels to connect with fellow writers and readers, they can be useful for those who prefer to speak instead of type.

To use the voice channels, all you have to do is click on the channel you wish to join, and you’ll be connected.

If you want to mute/unmute or deafen/undeafen yourself, you can simply click on the microphone or headphones symbols on the bottom left.

In the case that you can’t hear others or others can’t hear you, all you have to do is click on the cog symbol next to the headphones symbol to open your settings.

From there, navigate to the “Voice & Video” section under “App Settings.”

After you have navigated to “Voice & Video,” all you have to do is make sure your “Input Device” and your “Output Device” are correctly selected.

Additionally, if you would like to chat to someone face-to-face, you can turn on your webcam by pressing the camera symbol on the bottom left.

You can also share your screen with whoever is in the voice call with you. To do this, just click on the monitor symbol, again on the bottom left.

That’s all, folks.

We look forward to you joining our Discord server and benefiting from it. Please leave me a comment on this article, and I will get back to you with an invitation in a private message. If you use Slack and also want to join Discord, you can click on the pinned message of the social conversations channel on Slack workspace.

Thanks, Mike Broadly, for volunteering to be the first moderator today. I look forward to more moderators to make our Discord a pleasant work space.

If you enjoy my posts and would like to stay updated on the latest gaming-related news, technology advancements, design trends, and social media insights, I invite you to follow my profile.

I will continue to share my thoughts and insights on a wide range of topics in the world of entertainment and technology.

With that being said, thank you for reading my post, and have a good one.
