MEDIUM

I Spend An Astonishing 25.5 Hours On Medium Each Week

Here is the breakdown

This is not me, but my face kind of looks like that when I’m writing? (Photo by cottonbro)

I felt it would be a good idea to check how much time I spend on Medium each week. My gut feeling tells me that I spend a lot of time, but just how much is it?

So, I thought I would break it down this way to find out.

Responding To Comments

I spend about 30 minutes responding to comments each day. This would be 3.5 hours a week. Much of the time isn’t actually typing up a response.

It’s filtering through all the other notifications, like stories that received claps and follow notifications. I don’t want to miss any comments that need responding, so I go through it very carefully.

Editing

I spend about 1.5 dedicated hours per week editing for New Writers Welcome, and then sometimes on and off in between if I have additional time

Writing

I don’t spend a dedicated time of day to specifically write because I often lose focus or multi-task. I also use my phone to write if I’m not at home and I’m waiting for something.

For example, if I’m waiting for my food at a restaurant, I might write a line or two it is taking a long time.

I’d estimate it to be about 1.5 hours a day or 10.5 hours per week.

Formatting

I spend about an hour formatting my drafts, so that they are ready to be published. This includes finding the right headlines and photos, which take the longest time.

About a week ago, I had 20 drafts ready to go and now I’m down to 10.

I feel like I need a good stash of drafts, so I don’t feel rushed or behind on publishing. I don’t do the formatting each day, so I’d estimate this to be about 3 hours per week.

Reading Other Works

I don’t spend dedicated time reading Instead, I’ll do it throughout the day and usually before I sleep. I’d estimate it to be about 1 hour a day or about 7 hours per week.

I don’t think I’ve forgotten anything, but those are all the activities that I do on Medium. If I tally all the times, it would be about 25.5 hours a week.

Wow. I’m not even sure if that sounds right. It’s hard to gauge some of the tasks that I do on and off. I do go on Medium every day of the week.

Assuming 25.5 hours a week is right, this would come out to about 3.5 hours a day. It’s not a continuous 3.5 hours, rather, it’s spread throughout the day.

I almost want to deliberately set aside time for each of these tasks, work uninterrupted, and not squeeze it in during any other time frame. This would be more accurate and not so much of an estimate. I do believe that 3.5 hours a day sounds right.

Do you think 3.5 hours is too little or too much? If you’re interested in how much I earn, here are a couple of stories I previously wrote. I know it sounds like a lot of work for little money.

At 25.5 hours per week, writing on Medium almost equates to a part-time job.

How much time do you spend on Medium in a week?

Oh no! Did you hit that darn 3 story limit again? Get rid of it once and for all by joining Medium. It only costs $5 per month. Since joining and reading more on Medium, I’ve also been earning more money each month. Engagement is important and you can’t do that effectively by reading only 3 stories a month.
