I Make 10 Times More Money Today Than When I Started Here
I’m rich! … Rich — ish? On my way to rich? Yeah! That’s it!
My journey on this platform began 8 months ago. Back then I tried to motivate myself to become a better writer by publishing a lot. At the time I didn’t really care about the potential earnings. However, I must admit that I secretly wanted to be able to earn my subscription money back. I never fathomed that I would actually earn some income.

After 8 months, I think about it more or less the same. I don’t need to motivate myself anymore to publish. I write because it is fun. And… I can’t help looking at my earnings every once in a while.
Lately, I haven’t published a lot as I now pursue another writing hobby: I try and code Chrome Extensions. Most of my stories now revolve around one of the three I have released. And one is responsible that I am currently very aware of my earnings: it’s the one that allows you to analyze your earnings.
Earlier, the extension showed your earnings per story in a table. While that is fun for the numberphiles among us, it leaves the more visual-oriented people wanting for something… different.
So, the last couple of days I added a visualization to the extension. Now it shows a colourful graph for your viewing pleasure. I do hope that you have zoomed in on the picture above, because in there’s a lot of data to be shown in eight months.
My Earnings 8 Months Ago
In the graph, orange represents cumulative earnings and blue represents earnings/story. They are plotted over time, back from when I first published a story to now.

You see here that when I got my first earnings, I made a whopping 22 cents. At that point that was $ 0.073 per story!
That’s not half bad. At this rate I only need to write 68 stories a month to get my subscription back!
My Earnings Now
Let’s fast forward to the present. A breakdown per day would become tedious very fast. I zoomed in a bit to show you the full details.

As you can see I had made a total of $90,51 dollars in 8 months' time. With 125 stories published, this comes down to $0.724 per story. That’s ten times compared to 8 months ago!
Now I only need to publish 7 stories each month to earn back my subscription.
My Earnings Next Month
The point of the extension is to enable the user to analyze earnings on the platform. Looking at the graph below, I see that my return on investment per story is getting higher. It’s not stellar, but in a few lifetimes I’ll be rich!
Did I say I needed to publish 7 stories? That’s not exactly true. Let’s take a look at another of those charts (one I didn’t include in the extension; it’s only for you, because you’re special). Take note the black line: it’s the number of stories I have published.

See that big black horizontal line in the middle? It’s the holidays :) I didn’t publish anything there. There were some earnings, though (orange) After my vacation, however, I started to publish again and now you see that my earnings are climbing fast. Apparently, taking a break and pivoting your writing can lead to good things.
Also note the horizontal black line at the end. I didn’t publish anything lately. Still, I managed to rake in $1.43 in 12 days. Take a look.

So, I don’t know what the future will bring me, but I think it is safe to say that the data provided by my extension has some value for looking back and doing predictions that might or might not come true.
I am now making 10x more per story than when I started out on Medium. Sadly, that doesn’t go for the total earnings. Someday I’ll crack the code of being able to have fun writing a viral article that actually pays.
For now, I’ll just stick to doing what I know is fun.
