I Left Freelancing for Years After This Stupid Incident
Ended my freelancing career for many years.
I started my freelancing career as a Graphic designer, 3 years ago. Before starting freelancing, I learned everything about it for months. And when I completed my learning, I made an account on Fiverr and tried hard to get my first project. Because I was aware of the difficulties of getting the first freelance project. I worked for two months to get my first project but didn’t succeed.
But after some days I got my first $100 project from Facebook. Yes, I got it from Facebook. I think Facebook is a gold mine for new freelancers, I have also written about getting your first project from Facebook.
After completing my first project, I got motivated to work more as a freelancer and I tried almost two more months to get another project but failed to get one. So I started learning more about Fiverr and freelancing, I was trying to understand that why am I not getting any projects.
And I learned an idea from a Youtuber. He said, “Occupy more of the internet real estate”. This means try to work on every platform to expand your business. And after listening to him, I started researching on different freelancing platforms and found many platforms to get in.
One of those platforms was Upwork, If you are a freelancer, you may have heard of this platform. It’s not a platform for beginner freelancers, but I registered there to check if it works for me.
That stupid incident
After registering, I quickly send proposals to many jobs as I can. And after 3 hours, when I checked my profile. I saw that I got a response from a client, I was very happy to see the response that early on a platform like Upwork.
He told me to design a logo for his business. But the condition was to design a rough sketch for the logo and if he likes it, he will give me the project to design the logo in Illustrator. This was not right because I have already sent him many of my logo designs. But I said “Yes”, because it was my early stages in freelancing.
But then he told me to design the logo in 3 hours without paying extra. It was almost 12:30 at the night, So I messaged him to give me 7 hours. So that I can sleep because it was midnight and I also have to check other logo references in his business to design him a logo that perfectly matches his business. But he didn’t agree and said that he want the logo instantly and gave me an extra hour.
Now I have 4 hours to design him a logo. So I quickly started working on his logo to design a perfectly matching logo. I decided not to sleep, to complete the design. I designed 3 different sketches of the logo and then chose the best one to send him.
But when I messaged him that I have designed the sketch for the logo. He replied that I have selected another person to design the logo for me, without even checking my design, which hit me hard.
And after that, I have never tried working as a freelancer again. Because it was very demotivating for a 17 or 18 years old teenager, who was treated like this. But now I have decided to start freelancing again with strong courage because in these past years I have learned many things, which will help me continue my journey with passion and happiness without demotivation.
