Metabolic Health and Inspirational Fat Loss
Here’s How Luella Shed 40 Pounds.
Seven simple yet powerful takeaways transformed her life, resulting in a defined and healthier body with a better mood.

How a perceived “rah-rah speech” changed a rigorous academic’s life positively
My goal in writing this story is to show seven simple yet powerful ideas to ignite fat loss goals by sharing an exciting story of an academic friend who transformed her health and fitness with a simple mindset shift.
Logic and emotions play different roles in the fat loss journey. We need to leverage both with prudence and diligence.
Luella secured multiple thousand dollars of research funds, published in tier-one peer-reviewed journals, and got awards for her postdoctoral studies and professorial role.
However, she failed to prevent her body from becoming obese, causing unnecessary suffering and pain due to conflict between her neocortex and limbic system. Her story reminded me of Juliana, a nutrition scientist who struggled with obesity despite her sharp brain and vast knowledge in the field.
Tony Robbins, with no formal educational background, right or wrong way, inspired millions of people for decades, and he still does. Many people admire him. Undoubtedly, some people, like Luella, dislike him.
I never heard everyone loves everyone on this planet. Throughout history, some people even hated saints or angels. As one of my faithful friends humorously said once, “some people even hate god.” Liking or disliking a person is a subjective point.
This story is not about whether Tony is a good or bad leader. But it is about how Tony’s ordinary messages, delivered in an extraordinary way influenced and inspired a highly skeptical person to move from her comfort zone to a growth zone to achieve her neglected goals.
Interestingly, Luella, an academic with a semi-aboriginal background raised by English parents, did not like people’s uncritical enthusiasm and excitement in her circles, hence refraining from them.
Furthermore, she had a negative image of Tony, thinking he lacked rigor and just moved the boisterous crowds with his “rah-rah speeches”. Ironically, she didn’t know this type of speech was what her subconscious desired for her goals, but her neo-cortex suppressed it.
Another premise Luella disapproved of Tony’s content was the thought that he manipulated people’s emotions.
Yet, paradoxically and admittedly by herself, her emotions needed to be manipulated to achieve her secretly desired goals. So she denied and suppressed her painful and difficult emotions like Albert.
Loving reading and researching, Luella grew up with books. Her friends called her a relentless nerd. She had only a few friends who accompanied her to school libraries.
They dedicated their lives to books and academic papers as a nerd group.
Not surprisingly, Luella selected a career to suit her hobby. She became a researcher and lecturer in world cultures, a broad and exciting topic that stimulated her brain and excited her professional life.
Her anthropologic studies, coupled with contemporary philosophies, made a tremendous impact in empowering aboriginal culture in Australia, introducing it to global settings.
Her close and caring friends Audrey, Maggie, and Juliana, who were affected by Tony’s seminars, jointly gifted Luella a $1,500 ticket in the front rows to his upcoming workshop in the town. They each covered the $500 cost of this expensive seminar.
First, Luella did not like the idea. But she did not want to hurt the feelings of her best friends. So, she decided to attend the seminar hesitantly. This serendipitous seminar became a catalyst in Luella’s fat loss journey, teaching the importance of humility as a bonus to her.
Luella said she knew everything that Tony was saying. There was not a single idea new to her. However, the way Tony packaged and presented his ideas made a difference for her. More precisely, Tony influenced her to take action despite resistance from her primitive brain.
When I asked Luella what key messages she learned from Tony, she said nothing new. However, the way Tony spoke “awakened the giant sleeping within her subconscious world,” even though she disliked a related book she read by Tony in the mid-1990s.
Despite her dislike of Tony’s content initially, to her surprise, with humility, Luella gifted a ticket to one of her disadvantaged friends for a similar seminar ticket. Her dislike of Tony turned to like with a mindset shift.
With the transformation in her fat loss journey, she also influenced and inspired many Australian aboriginal people in her research circles who were affected by obesity due to excessive alcohol use and bad eating regimes.
I summarize the seven critical points that Luella elicited from Tony’s seminars and books that resonated with her. Together, these items made a ripple effect in sustaining her fat loss goals.
In the first year, by making her body insulin sensitive and reducing visceral fat, she lost 40 pounds, gradually improved her fitness, reduced metabolic syndrome risks, and gained a beautiful body that she subconsciously desired.
She now adores her body when looking in the mirror. She still works as an academic and is still successful in her profession, but she learned to see positives more than negatives in herself and others.

1 — Learn to love yourself.
Luella never liked her body until she took Tony’s seminar. Looking at herself in the mirror disgusted her. However, when she implemented self-love and compassion principles, her emotions significantly changed from negative to positive. She ate, drank, exercised, slept, rested, and behaved more mindfully.

2 — Set smart goals.
There was nothing new about setting goals for Luella’s academic excellence. However, setting smart goals leading to action was new to her. First, she made her personal goals specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Then, she visualized them and primed her mind to remain on track.

3 — Observe your emotional triggers.
This point was big for Luella. Her mental stress in the academic world created significant negative emotions leading her to eat and drink mindlessly. In her terms, she lacked emotional intelligence and maturity. Learning about her emotional triggers gave her new insights into her body and mind.

4 — Strengthen your resilience.
Each setback in her life led Luella towards chronic stress raising her cortisol (stress hormone) and preventing her from losing fat. Despite her sharp mind, she experienced brain fog at a young age. Forgiving and loving herself was an excellent start for her. She reframed her setbacks as pleasant challenges by moving from a fixed mindset to a growth one.

5 — Convert bad habits to good ones.
She knew the importance of habits in our lives. Nevertheless, her vast knowledge did not prevent her from forming bad habits like smoking, binge eating, and excessive alcohol consumption, causing her to increase her fat stores and putting her in a metabolically disadvantaged position. However, her self-love and emotional maturity helped her build great habits, eliminating food cravings, and making a significant difference in her fat loss journey.

6 — Build your supportive tribe.
Most of Luella’s friends were academic. They loved criticizing everything and everyone. Their life revolved around looking at negative aspects and neglecting positive ones. She learned the importance of supportive people after her friends gifted Tony’s seminar to indicate their love for Luella. Her newly formed habits strengthened her resilience after creating distance from her non-serving friends and hanging around the supportive ones.

7 — Re-Write your life story.
Luella lived with a complex story conflicting with her primitive and thinking brain. Her life story was fake in her terms, as she used to deny and suppress her authentic emotions. Finally, she learned to create a realistic tale representing who she was and what she wanted to achieve. By reframing her thoughts, she re-wrote her life story helping her re-wire her brain to happiness and joy.

Conclusions and Takeaways
Even though it sounds simple, Luella’s story contains valuable lessons. Therefore, I thought sharing them would be valuable. The key takeaway point is that knowing and acting are two different things. She knew a lot but failed to act on her knowledge.
Tony’s simple seminar catalyzed her to turn knowledge into action. So what she lacked in her life was a “rah-rah speech,” which she disliked and disapproved initially. Changing her mindset with humility, she achieved her desired goals and helped others achieve them.
Like me, Luella believed that fat loss was not rocket science, but we convoluted it, overcomplicated it, and made it harder than necessary. All she needed was to create a customized plan based on her knowledge, act on them with inspiration, and turn them into lifestyle habits with persistence and consistency.
Two points from Tony's content made the difference from a fat loss and healthy weight management perspective. The first one was preventing her from eating mindlessly via her instincts. The second point was to take actions such as exercise, quality sleep, rest, and fun that her body needed.
In my opinion and experience, it is not what we know or how much we know but how we act and use the knowledge that matters for success.
