How to Find the Topics for Curated Stories
Steps to find the topics of your distributed stories by Medium in the new interface

2022 Update: Medium changed the format and style. So now, we can only see the topics by clicking on the View Page Source feature of the web browsers.
Several changes were made on Medium as discussed in this story.
The only good news so far is reverting the user names on the front page.
And I have another good news today. But it was a bit of hard work.
As an editor, I have been struggling to find the topics which disappeared from the curated stories in the publication dashboard within the last couple of days.
I finally figured out the topic names where they were hidden.
It required a few steps to see the topics an article is distributed.
Many writers keep asking me the question of how to find the topics in curated stories. Rather than answering hundreds of email requests, I thought it would be easier to create a post and share the links for the inquiries.
In this brief post, I provide the steps to identify the topics.
To create the steps, I used a curated article on ILLUMINATION-Curated by Dr Jeff Livingston yesterday as a sample.
Here are the steps.
Step 1: Click on the three dots (…) on the left top corner. Choose Edit story option.

Step 2: Click on the More settings option from the drop down menu.

Step 3: Click on the Reader Interests from the Story Settings.

Step 4: Check the Primary notification. Underneath it, you can see the topic name for distribution.

In this specific example, this story was distributed to topic #self.
I also created a screen capture from one of my curated to show the primary and secondary distribution list.

It took me a couple of days to find this hidden feature.
In the previous version, I was able to see the topics from the list on the publication dashboard. When I clicked on the identified story, I was able to see the topic names in the story settings.
It is not possible anymore.
At least, it is better than nothing!
Despite being cumbersome, we can find whether a story is distributed to a topic or not. This is an additional task for editors to create a report of the curated stories in publications.
However, I don’t understand why Medium made it harder to identify the distributed topics of stories. It was much easier and more effective before.
Any ideas?
As an idea and customer wish list, wouldn’t it be great to have a button on the publication dashboard which can sort out and list all curated articles in a text file?
Automation can save valuable time for humans to focus on creative tasks.
