Christmas is considered to be the happiest time of the year, the opportunity we have to feel grateful for our meet our loved ones, spending relaxing moments at the festive table. Statistics, however, show that Christmas is the time of year when people experience the most common symptoms of depression. It is indeed difficult to manage our negative mood when it manifests itself, let alone to regroup our strengths when unpleasant feelings are experienced.

Some people are saddened by the commercialization of Christmas, as the burden falls on gifts (usually more expensive than other occasions) while at the same time emphasis is placed on “perfect” social gatherings. Still, others think that at the end of the year they have to make an account of the past year and it is a common phenomenon to “victimize” themselves because in their opinion they have achieved fewer than the others.

Finally, many people might experience depression and loneliness during holidays, either because they lost a loved person or because they are isolated and unemployed.

What do mental health professionals advise?

If depression is severe, consult a mental health professional. Do not accept any “perfect” representation of Christmas as projected by the media, various other actors, or even people around you. The fewer expectations you have for the “perfect” holiday atmosphere, the more you will enjoy every moment of your present life.
