How Does it Work to Make Money as a Writer on Medium and Where to Write and Make Money on Other Platforms.
The question was asked
The question I was asked today:
“Currently, what are payments to a writer on Medium based on? Claps? Reading time?”
“I believe I need to find a source or more other than Medium if I wish to make a small (or even a large) wage doing this.”
First, I would like to say: It is not easy to make money in writing.
MEDIUM
Medium is a wonderful writing community. I love the collaboration and community we have here.
My understating of how Medium platform works:
It depends on how many people read your stories and how many stories they read. The money comes from our collective membership payment. The more stories I read the less money you get for a story I read that is yours. Depending on how many followers you have as well and how often you post stories and what is the visibility of your stories. Some stories I get $0.01 cent it takes a lot to add up. Money also based on reading time as well so if someone does not fully read your story…less money. The most money I made in a month on Medium is $36 with 1.3K followers and writing an article almost every day.
NEWSBREAK
I also started writing on Newsbreak they I heard pay better I am still working up to have the 100 followers there to apply for payment I am up to 78 people now who are registered on the Newsbreak platform I have 31 stories there and a lot more views. I wrote an article about it recently you might like it.
YOUTUBE
Another option is to tell your stories on YouTube. I also started doing that it also takes time to build it us you need 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours to start to make money there.
SUBSTACK
On substack you can write your stories, create a subscriber list, do a newsletter and monetize your newsletter.
QUORA
On Quora you can answer questions, create posts and choose to monetize your posts. I do most my post here free, monetize a few. I use my post here to raise awareness for my posts on Medium, YouTube and Newsbreak.
Vocal Media has an option for regular membership and Vocal + membership. With Vocal + membership just like on Medium you start earning money. Depending on if you have the Vocal + or not how much money you make per 1000 reads it is about 6 cents per 1000 reads. You need a lot of reads to add up to some money. You also have to have collected a minimum of $25 before you can withdraw any money. Vocal + gives you the option to enter Challanges. Since I joined, I made less than $30 total on Vocal Media, I also write less there than on Medium.

MAKE A BOOK
Another thing we could put your stories into a book. I created multiple books from content published on Medium. Options to self-publish I have used on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Gumroad and on Draft2Digital. I self-published 6 books so far.
The most recent book we created in Dancing Elephants Press with 21 authors is Holistic Journey Toward Wellness.
My previous book Darkness and Light is collected from Medium stories from 2021.
GABRIELLA OFFERS
Offering others an interview and place it all over social media could attract more people to your stories. I did this it for others on Medium. Some stories are on Medium, Newsbreak and on You Tube if you like to take a look.
