Writing on Newsbreak vs Medium
Sharing data on writing platform experiences

I started to write on Newsbreak about a year ago after reading an article about it on Medium. Many wonderful writers I know write on Newsbreak successfully and make money on this platform. Examples include Yana Bostongirl, Trista Signe Ainsworth, and B.R. Shenoy. Please check out their work on Newsbreak and on Medium.
Newsbreak has a similar policy to Medium that you need 100 followers to get paid. As of today, I had written 30 articles on Newsbreak compared to Medium where I had written hundreds of articles.
It has been more difficult for me to gather followers on Newsbreak. I have more than 100 followers but not all of them are registered, followers. Newsbreak defines registered followers as:
“A registered follower means the follower has created a user account with NewsBreak (either on the web or downloaded the app) and is not just visiting on the web as a guest.”
The visibility on Newsbreak is higher for me on Newsbreak compared to Medium. 346K impressions on 30 stories create great visibility.

When it comes to followers it is 379 on Newsbreak with 76 registered followers while on Medium my current follower count is 1,329.
Followers on Medium are defined as:
“Readers who follow you on Medium. This excludes deactivated, deleted, or suspended users.”
I have been on Newsbreak for one year compared to the two years on Medium. Some of the time I have inactivity on both platforms.
While the views are fewer on Newsbreak with a total number of 4,441 it is more difficult to get all the overall view numbers on Medium. I would have to go to each individual story o look at each month back since I started. As an example, if I look at my previous 30 days on Medium from the end of October to the end of November I get this result of 3,213 vires with 1484 reads and 705 fans.

When looking at the statistics of Medium compared to Newsbreak and the fact that I wrote 25–30 stories between the end of October to the end of November the results are not that far off from each other.
I am assuming that if I write more on Newsbreak my number of views and reads as well as my followers will increase. It is easier for me to write on Medium. I have my Medium family, I enjoy the engagement, and I have two publications and many wonderful authors who I can call my friends.
I am planning to work on writing more on Newsbreak and continue to write the same amount on Medium. Currently, I do get paid on Medium a few cents after an article or less depending on the Medium shares determined by some magical computing in the back end of Medium finances.
My most-viewed article on Medium is a recipe for a simple hearty vegetable soup with 4.6 K views earned $2.09. The reason for this is that only 2% of the views were internal and 98% of the views were external.

My least viewed article on Medium is a story about Mothers. It was a surprise for me as I was looking at all my writing. This story has 0 views. I did post this story in 2020 just as I was starting to write on Medium and did not know many people yet. Still, it is a lovely story I think I hope it will get some views at some point.

Overall, I think Newsbreak and Medium are similar platforms. I can not speak to the earnings on Newsbreak yet. Medium does have way more engagement and more of a connected family feeling compared to Newsbreak.
The amazing thing about the Medium platform is collaboration. The beautiful fruit of that is a book that we were able to create together with 21 authors from Medium.
I am curious to hear about your experiences with different writing platforms.
I hope you have enjoyed this reading,
Have a wonderful day,
Gabriella
