PUBLISHING TIPS

Self-Publishing Tips from Gabriella

Publish Your Work on Gumroad

In the past few weeks, I have been working hard to place some of the content I had been creating in a store. I was introduced to Gumroad by Alejandro Betancourt. Thank you for introducing me to this option Alejandro Betancourt. I currently have 2 of my books on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and they have not been getting much traction. Printing a book is expensive and I was looking for an alternate way to provide content and receive more than a few cents back after selling a book.

I have been creating and offering some free content on my website like audio recordings of my short story and poetry book, meditations, and imagery. I felt it was time to start to move toward the next step.

On Gumroad you can create books, classes, post any products you like. The advantages are that there is a community of people, helpful staff and it is free. Until you start to sell. Even after you are selling things, they only take a small percentage of your income. The highest fee is 9% of what you sell. The more you sell the fee decreases.

A Sharing Randomly reminded me that other people might like to develop content they can publish. Thank you Lorena.

You can check out the information under Gumroad pricing. Compared to other companies Gumroad has very fair pricing when it comes to sales.

Gumroad pricing

Gumroad has helpful how-to start videos and a community where you can connect with people who are also selling their products.

I had created a store; it was fairly easy to set up and I have been linking the store pages that can be embedded in my website’s store. There is more work and fine-tuning that can be done but I am grateful to have some of my books and meditations out there at a fair price. Also, there is a way to let the person who buys your product determine the price or set a base price and a “wish” price. I set up one for donations so I can continue my work and offer some of my products like my meditations for free.

This past few weeks I was able to create 10 products in the store. One of them is blog posts that I had pulled together from my early days in blog writing on my website and from Medium from 2019–2020.

You can create your products in any format and upload them. It can be videos, classes, live classes that you will have in the future, a pdf. Options are limitless. If you upload a pdf, they place a mark on it so it can not be shared.

The only thing is that using pdf converter does cost money and if you plan to keep writing and placing products up on Gumroad and other platforms it might be worth getting the $14.99/month for the Adobe product. I had it last year, then I stopped using it and now just reactivated it.

This is how my Gumroad product page looks right now:

Creating a product is as simple as signing up, watching a few introductory videos, hitting products — add new and all the steps you will be walked through. There are some features I have not figured out yet in detail and all the products could have even more fine-tuning, but it is simple and a great way to start to ease into selling your stories, pictures, art, or any product you have developed or plan to develop.

Please share what type of platforms are you using to offer your products.

Let me know what you think and if you find this content helpful,

Thank you for reading,
