Here’s Why Tech Giants Are Begging AI Developers to Slow Down.
Global alarm bells on proliferation of AI-generated content

Summary of the story on the Lampshade of Illumination
This post is a short form of the original version of the story titled Tech Giants Are Begging AI Developers to Slow Down, summarizing the key points for Technology Hits readers.
Recently an open letter signed by over 1,100 leading figures in the tech industry has called for a six-month “pause” on developing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems, including ChatGPT.
The signatories argue that AI systems with human-competitive intelligence pose profound risks to society and humanity.
They suggest that the tech industry should pause for thought before developing anything more powerful than GPT-4. Governments should institute a moratorium if the industry does not enact this voluntarily.
Recent developments have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one, not even their creators, can understand, predict, or reliably control.
GPT-4 has been used to create Google Chrome extensions and iPhone apps, the latter from scratch and now available on the official app store.
Some have even tasked GPT models with creating investment strategies and implementing them. These models can rapidly have a major impact on the real world, even before considering the question of what happens if they become sentient.
Therefore, the call to pause developing advanced AI systems is not unfounded. The tech industry must take the time to consider the potential risks and benefits before continuing to push the boundaries of AI development.
