From AGI To Artificial Superintelligence: OpenAI’s 10-Year Ultimatum
OpenAI challenges us to prepare for the future of AGI and superintelligence.

Imagine a world where machines are not just our partners or assistants; they exceed our intellectual capabilities, surpassing human skills in every domain…
This idea, once the domain of Star Trek and Asimov, is morphing from a futuristic fantasy into a tangible reality. In fact, artificial superintelligence is racing toward us at a speed we didn’t even foresee.
People got scared, and some even suggested a moratorium on AI development. OpenAI also raised a warning flag in their recent blog post. TLDR:
- AI and superintelligence could rival the productivity of large corporations within a decade.
- Superintelligence poses existential risks similar to those of nuclear energy and synthetic biology.
- Risk mitigation strategies include the establishment of an international authority for superintelligence oversight.
- Despite risks, the development of superintelligence is seen as essential due to its significant potential and growing feasibility.
- AI models with less advanced capabilities should be subjected to lighter regulation.

The Race For AGI
Just to recap, OpenAI is an organization founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others with the mission to build safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence (AGI) directly.
AGI refers to highly autonomous systems that can outperform humans in most economically valuable work, which means creating machines that can truly understand the world, exhibit creativity, and learn from limited data sets.
However, OpenAI is now talking about “future AI systems dramatically more capable than even AGI”, implying the emergence of superintelligent systems that wouldn’t merely equal human intelligence, as with AGI, but significantly surpass it in capability.

Preparing for the Inevitable
Today’s systems will create tremendous value in the world and, while they do have risks, the level of those risks feel commensurate with other Internet technologies […].
By contrast, the systems we are concerned about will have power beyond any technology yet created, and we should be careful not to water down the focus on them by applying similar standards to technology far below this bar.
OpenAI sends a clear and urgent message: the time to prepare for the advent of AGI (and everything that’s coming after it) is now. It’s imperative, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, that we focus on the governance of superintelligence within the next 10 years and foster a globally cooperative community to ensure AGI is developed with humanity’s well-being in mind.
This precautionary approach seems especially important considering the possible challenges that such advanced AI could bring about sooner rather than later, including:
- Escalation of misinformation through perfected deep fakes: Deepfakes could manipulate realities in media, leading to misinformation and deception on a large scale (o get an idea of where we’re headed, check out this collection of deep fake incidents)
- Transformation of societal norms and culture: Advanced AI could reshape cultural norms and societal structures, potentially destabilizing established ways of life.
- Potential for widespread job losses due to automation: If AI systems outperform humans in most economically valuable work, many traditional jobs could be displaced, leading to significant societal and economic impacts.
- Escalation in autonomous warfare, raising ethical and security dilemmas: Superintelligent systems could lead to advanced autonomous weaponry, raising complex ethical questions about control and accountability, while also posing new security threats.
