QUEERLY TRANS

Friday Highlights in Queerly Trans (April 29, 2022)

Queer trans dreams, musical influences, and linguistic challenges!

In case you haven’t followed/subscribed to Queerly Trans yet, here are some recent writings that we’ve gathered for you!

Emma Holiday brings her personal true fairy tale to life in a beautifully written post called “Trans Dreams Can Come True”.

For me, I was able to bury my desire so deep that, when I did dream about being a girl, I just dismissed it as a personality defect that was my private problem. I built an amazing deep and impenetrable defensive wall.

Kai Arden describes an experience of discovering multiple layers of identity over time that so many queer trans people face. This powerful story shows that music can help us to not only find ourselves, but also to find lost words.

Did you know that expressive aphasia (external wikipedia link) kind of temporarily goes away when you listen to familiar songs? Well, mine does, anyway. So I’ve been listening to music recently, mostly because of that, but also because I can drive with the windows down, singing along, feeling everything I now have a name for.

As a trans person from the South of the United States, Kai Stowers can empathize with some of the struggles surrounding the adoption of inclusive language that has faced stigma in the past for different reasons. The resulting article is an interesting exploration into the linguistics of inclusion and emotional barriers to changes in language.

Learning to use “everyone” took time, but I hit an internal roadblock when it came to using “y’all.” Despite spending my formative years in Texas and Louisiana, I could not say the word, and I felt a twinge of annoyance each time another person used it. My inner soundtrack wondered if my resistance was proof that I wasn’t committed to inclusion for the LGBTQ+ communities I deeply care about.

Stephenie Magister shares the incredible and vulnerable story of how having a beard both saved her life and almost killed her.

It happened when I left the gym. I don’t remember much of what happened, and not just because of the injury. But that part won’t make sense unless I tell you what happened.

Inspired by an idea from Stephenie Magister, Logan’s Corner’s most recent writing prompt asks us to reimagine an established story with trans and/or gender diverse characters.

Who was your favorite character that you would like to imagine has a different gender background? Could you rewrite the story with a character who is trans, non-binary, agender, or maybe gender fluid? How would that change the plot?
