Does gender impact character development?

A conversation with Stephenie Magister inspired this week’s writing prompt! She wrote a mini-series of Little Mermaid fan fiction with a transgender main character.

Today, in Prism & Pen, Esther Spurrill-Jones also shared her own interesting experience using gender bending for central characters in fan fiction in the article “I Wrote 100K Words of Genderbent Star Wars Fanfic in 5 Years”.

Who was your favorite character that you would like to imagine has a different gender background? Could you rewrite the story with a character who is trans, non-binary, agender, or maybe gender fluid? How would that change the plot?

Alternatively, you can write a completely original fiction story or poem with one or more gender diverse characters.

You could also tell an otherwise true story, but change the gender background of one or more people involved. Would that change the outcome or some other major aspect of the story? Or would everything stay the same, except for that one detail?
