Food on my table
A poem about grocery shopping
To market, to market to buy a big ham
Some Pringles, some apples, some jelly or jam
Bananas and oranges, whatever delights
Strawberries, carrots to boost up your sights
I’ll take home my groceries to share with my friends
The drinks overflowing, the laughs never end
My friends’ bellies rumble, the roars of a beast
Together we cook up a magical feast
We sit down to our feast, quite grateful for friends
When can we go grocery shopping again?
Thank for including me in the weekly writing prompt! For my first submission, I thought I’d start with a little poem (because I do that).
In all seriousness though, the cost of groceries has become quite expensive where I live, as I’m sure it has for many of you, too! The pandemic saw soaring prices across a variety of goods, and they never came quite back down again, did they?
As a single lady, I get the joy of grocery shopping all for myself. That may have sounded sarcastic — but it’s not at all!
I love to spend the time picking out a new coffee to try. I study each one, as if I can tell from the package which coffee is going to bring me the most joy and delight my senses. You know the feeling, but in case you forgot, I’ll direct you to another coffee lover’s story who can explain it better than me:
What’s the only thing better than coffee? You got it. Dessert!
I try to be good, I do! I try to stick to a healthy eating plan, or else I get carried away. But once in a while, I just have to indulge in some French vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce (to be applied liberally!) and a crazy topping to go on top! Perhaps… Smooshed up Oreos? Gummy worms? Cookie dough?! I know, it’s too much! But I can’t seem to help myself :)
I truly do enjoy buying groceries, and am ever grateful that I am able to do it with a degree of ease (though I do mind my budget!). There is one catch though… I cannot cook. Not even a little bit. I’m the kind of cook who can’t even put a lasagna in the oven properly. How does it come out burnt and still frozen at the same time? What’s even the physics behind that!?
I feel very grateful to have enough room in the budget for a treat! I also feel very grateful for my friends and family, and not just because they provide me with hearty homecooked meals from time to time, which I never figured out how to make myself! One day I’ll learn, you’ll see!
I really enjoyed this writing prompt. I’m pretty sure I know what’s going on my shopping list today, too :D
Looking forward to reading your responses!
