Five Uncomfortable Truths That Will Change How You Think About a Spiritual Awakening
It will break you to pieces.

A spiritual awakening can be associated with a bright and shiny promise of never-ending happiness. I know, I had high expectations. Boy, I was wrong.
Yet, hardly anyone tells you that the process of spiritual awakening sucks.
A spiritual awakening is not the absence of suffering. It is the unconditional acceptance of whatever life offers. And it takes practice.
While it transforms how you view the world, a spiritual awakening also invites you to shed obsolete truths and dive into the unknown. No wonder it is scary as hell.
Waking up hurts.
A spiritual awakening is a major wake-up call from the universe. And it can be a slap in the face. Not pretty, huh?
Spiritual awakening has no room for lies.
But the environment we grew up in is full of misinformation, repression, and illusion. When you wake up from the past delusion and start seeing the world with fresh eyes, you will feel uncomfortable.
In the process of spiritual awakening, there are no rose-coloured glasses. You live with the bad and the ugly and learn to perceive it through love and compassion.
You start to feel deeply. You learn to observe the environment through the Matrix — the past conditioning.
A spiritual awakening is a process of letting go of ideas that don’t necessarily serve us but feed us with the illusion of being safe.
We have created a persona based on past beliefs and assumptions. Now, spiritual awakening wants us to let go of those beliefs that do not align with who we really are. It is a painful challenge.
For example, we were taught that our career paths define our worth and who we are. A spiritual awakening proves otherwise. You will have to go against the society that worships social status.
When you wake up from the lies the world has been feeding you, you might feel numb, lost and confused as your world is tumbling down.
The spiritual awakening is about leaving behind beliefs that no longer serve you. It shines the light upon myths we have bought into for too long that hindered our growth.
Leaving the comfort zone is painful. But at the same time, insanely rewarding.
It will break you to pieces.
Only so that you can come out stronger.
Spiritual awakening is a disruptive process. It stirs intense feelings as your old life is falling apart, so the new one can blossom.
You have probably been through traumatic events and a lot of pain that prompted your soul to seek a better path. You’ll wake up one day and realize that you’re not the same person you once were.
Breakthroughs are preceded by breakdowns.
Learning to view the world from a different angle is a break-up with your old identity. And breakups are harsh.
You ditch obsolete ideologies and narratives that made you comfortable but offered no growth.
As your old identity is dying, you might venture into grief, after which comes a relief as the voice of the ego is no longer in the driver’s seat.
Breakthroughs are preceded by breakdowns.
The pain is okay. Grieving is a natural process, so embrace it and give yourself time to let go of your old career or relationship that no longer serves your growth.
Before you build a new world, you feel like your old life is falling apart.
It is exhausting.
When you dive deeper into yourself, you start questioning your every motif and behaviour.
You realize you have no control over your life. You start asking questions.
- What’s the point of life?
- Is there something greater than myself?
- Why do we buy products we don’t need?
You feel as though life around you is fake. Your soul is seeking freedom from social conditioning by trying to find the authentic path in this world.
Unquestioned life is not worth living.
You question everything, and it gets exhausting. But it also carries freedom. Unquestioned life is not worth living.
When you remove the social conditioning and unrealistic expectations of our family, education system and religion have put onto us, the limits to what you can achieve are endless.
A spiritual awakening attempts to purge what is not aligned with your soul’s true journey, or rather anything that’s hindering it from moving in that direction.
There’s nothing that will arm you to fearlessly face the world like following the calling of your soul. You are the most powerful when living an authentic life.
Such questions are valid and eye-opening, but they also lead to rejecting old ways of living and mainstream thinking, which brings me to my next point:
You end up alone.
Sort of.
You feel like you are alone.
When you break through the matrix, people won’t agree with you.
They will feel threatened by your newfound freedom, so they will try to put you in the box. The mad one. The freak. The recluse.
Do anything you can to resist staying in that box. Shine your light regardless of how everyone wants to see you.
A spiritual awakening lifts the veil of the egoistic mind. You no longer chase material items, wealth, or something else the ego craves. But other people still do.
Allow some relationships to fade. You may not be into partying and drinking anymore. And you are under no obligation to compromise your values.
Shine your light regardless of how everyone wants to see you.
When you remove yourself from relationships that destroy you, you invite those who build you up. It is okay to distance yourself from people who break your spirits so you can focus on your growth.
However, just because some people are on a different trajectory than you are, it doesn’t mean you have to abandon them. This phase of the awakening teaches you patience and compassion for people who don’t understand what you are going through.
Whenever you doubt your new path, remember how once you were lost. Today, you get to be a beacon of truth and light in someone else’s darkness.
When you become stronger, you will learn to look at them with love and understanding and their actions toward you will shift as your mindset changes.
It will test your limits.
There is no final destination for spiritual awakening. It is a constant state of growth.
We got used to reaching the top, winning a prize, where, in spiritual awakening, the win is the journey itself.
Your spiritual quest continues forever.
The awakening forces you to confront your deepest and darkest truths — often referred to as your shadow self.
You thought you had it all figured out only to face the next challenge and lessons that come with it.
One day, you find yourself on top of the world, and then, suddenly, you’re thrown into a dark pit.
Your spiritual quest continues forever.
Spiritual awakening teaches you that the pain is temporary. That as you climb the hardship, you also get a view worth fighting for.
Negative experiences do not inhibit but contribute to your learning process. Every disappointment carries a lesson.
Don’t give up.
Spiritual awakenings happen when you need them the most.
You will create a new reality at the price of shattering the old one. Something has to break down so that something new can flourish through the cracks.
Spiritual awakening is not an easy process. After all, it is the transformation of ideas you hold on to from childhood. It is the birth of a new you.
Old illusions fall apart. You will embrace the new paradigm. You will become more authentic and confident in your way of living.
When you lift yourself, you inspire others. Isn’t it a beautiful reason to continue with the process of awakening despite the pains and fears?
Spiritual awakening is not a comfortable experience, but it is a beautiful one.
It proves that beauty can be found in the darkest places.
