Here’s How Novelty Might Help Us Find Our Writing Niche.

Variety can be a cure for writers’ block and boredom

Do you sometimes feel stuck and have no motivation to write? I believe many writers would answer this question with a strong “yes”.

Experiencing boredom and sometimes losing motivation are normal life situations that writers need to understand and accept. However, we shouldn’t use it as an excuse or a showstopper for our success. We can see it as a transient situation to transition from our unproductive state to a productive state.

To overcome this challenge, we can play a trick with our minds. It is almost a child-like play. Our brains crave new things. Novelty seeking is a natural phenomenon for humans. It is in our DNA. It is even embedded in our endocrine system.

When we experience novelty in our lives, our brain release a neurotransmitter called dopamine associated with happiness and joy. Lack of dopamine can cause motivational issues and even is linked to depression. I think this background and context are enough to give the core message related to novelty.

Focus on novelty

One of the powerful answers to boredom and writer’s block question is to focus on a novelty. Experiencing novelty can create energy sparks in the brain to generate new ideas. We can connect with the higher self by using novelty as an inspiration and motivation tool.

As writers, we can create novelty in various areas of our writing practice.

The use of novelty is an effective method to move out of the comfort zone as it can activate the life energy for creativity. By using novelty, we can start opening new neural pathways in our brain. New neural pathways are not only good for our creativity and productivity but also prevent cognitive decline or, more optimistically, create cognitive reserves as we age.

By using novelty, we can push our limits and increase our capacity.

What can we do?

I want to take you on a journey in the next thirty days.

We can start playing a game called “variety with the novelty”. We are fortunate to have many members to play the game in our community.

My proposal is a new experimentation challenge to push our limits which can allow us not to feel stuck again in our writing practice. This challenge is designed to introduce the use of variety to our writing plan.

How can we achieve this goal?

Starting from today, I recommend you create a new list of topics outside of your expertise area. For this challenge, you need to choose a new [unfamiliar] topic each day that you haven’t written before.

You can select the topics randomly or based on your interest areas. For example, you can use the lists I use for the daily curation of our articles. We already have nine of them at your disposal. These lists have many topics. In addition, each topic is linked to at least one writer for collaboration purposes.

You can pick one of these lists and choose a topic that has nothing to do with your background. In other words, something which you haven’t written before. Start exploring the topic.

Perhaps, you can read a few articles about the topic. Based on your reading, start with questions and jot down your possible answers. Organize your answers in a structure and turn your points into a small article. Start with 100 to 300 words.

You may enrich your content with citations and quotes. You can use various inspiration points and motivation hacks. For example, you may check the biographies of experts in your topic, which can add a new dimension to your article. You may even interview one or more of the top writers on the topic. This activity can undoubtedly improve cross-pollination in our community. You can also open the path to serendipity. We may practice this at least for a month.

I am sure you will feel some discomfort initially, perhaps up to the first thirty days; it is natural. However, after the initial thirty days, suddenly, you will start feeling amazing. You will find yourself in flow states more frequently. Boredom will start fading and moving away from your life.

The new neural pathways in your brain will start getting thicker and denser. Your stress level will reduce, and the practice will turn into joy. Congratulations, you started growing.

You can start creating a baseline for your performance. Measure your performance daily using relevant metrics.
