Fiction Authors You Should Know (pt. 1)
Introducing some of the creative stars of Medium

I read a lot of fiction on Medium. Sometimes, I’m sure, I read good stories by a talented author, and then forget all about them.
Perhaps you do, too!
I recently started a list, ‘Fiction authors you should know about’, to help keep track of who is writing fiction here. Hopefully over time it will contribute to the community that I believe is growing:
I’ve only added a few authors so far (and just one story by each), but there are many more to come (this list is in the order I read them recently, by the way — it’s not a ranking in order of preference!).
I will introduce a few authors at a time in blog posts such as this one. In each case, I am copying the info from their bio, together with a few of my own impressions, and the occasional link.
- Mojave Green — Mojave Green — is a writer seeking to share stories both factual and fantastical. I know Mojave through his work on the Choose Your Own Adventure publication (CYOA), in which he has shared loads of well crafted drabble-length fantasy chapters. He also loves reading sci-fi, mystery, fantasy, and horror.
- David Perlmutter — David Perlmutter — is a freelance writer based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I know David from his awesome cartoon-focused fiction, and (of course) his avid reading and highlighting! He’s fond of a list, too.
- Cathylouise — Cathylouise — is a writer and poet, working on her first novel, who loves metal/rock, and is a follower of the old gods (slash pagan/heathen). I’ve read a lot of Cathy’s work and it spans multiple genres, including a web-novel.
- Jonathon Sawyer — Jonathon Sawyer — is a Canadian writer of short stories and a poet of dubious repute (his words). He likes to experiment with concepts and styles he find interesting. As well as his fun mashup challenges in the Kraken Lore, I know Jonathon from his CYOA stories and imaginative fiction.
- CleverandWtf — CleverandWtf — are sisters who love to read and write, mostly fantasy and speculative fiction. I’ve enjoyed their well-crafted fantasy and mystery fiction plus their stories about writing and about books. They also have a blog.
- Zane Dickens — Zane Dickens the Instigator — is a top writer, chief instigator (at Microcosm), and creator of the hugely popular 💯 story challenge. I’ve always admired both the punchy prose of his fiction stories and his thoughful and inspiring writing prompts and challenges. Check out his Substack to find out how to level up from hobbyist to ‘authorpreneur’.
- John Fanidis — John Fanidis — is a writer who enjoys creating unique fantasy worlds where science fiction joins forces with high fantasy and evil vampires. Sounds like fun, right? I’ve enjoyed John’s serial fiction, and he’s another one who has written CYOA chapters. He’s the founder of writing group, Studio VN21.
- Lark Morrigan — Lark Morrigan — is a poet, sci-fi and fantasy writer, a blogger, composer, music lover and literary symbolism enthusiast! I followed Lark’s journey through the 100 story challenge, and was always impressed by the breadth of her imagination!
- SLSnow88 — SLSnow88 — is another fiction author. She loves creating worlds, and entertaining people is engrained in her. I’ve been enjoying Shanice’s crime/suspense web-novel ‘Baby Burnett’, and she has written a lot of other atmospheric fiction, too. And she has a book on the way!
- FJCMontenegro — FJCMontenegro — is a writer who can’t wait for AI to steal his job. Yes, you read that right! FM is a bit of a creative genius when it comes right down to it, a master of the dark future, sci-fi and cyberpunk, and above all great storytelling. Today is a great day to shoutout his work, as he just finished the 100 story challenge with this piece.
There are plenty other authors on the list already, and several more on my mind but yet to be added. However, I’ll wrap this at 10 authors just now. Why not follow some of them (believe it or not, some Medium fiction writers are not getting boosted as much as they deserve).
Off you go — read!!
And remember, this is only part 1 (follow the list or sign up to my stories by email to keep track).
Long live fiction on Medium!
