Summary

Pike and Diera, characters in a fantasy drabble series, encounter a hooded woman who attacks them, only to be put to sleep by Pike's magic, illustrating the theme of false assumptions in the story.

Abstract

In the fantasy drabble "False Assumptions," part of the "Searching for Charity" series, the characters Pike and Diera face an aggressive hooded woman wielding a short sword. Pike, undeterred by the threat, casts a spell to induce sleep in the attacker, who falls and hits her head, comically subverting her initial aggressive stance. Diera, hiding under a table, comments on the potential headache the woman will have upon awakening. The story is part of a challenge by JF Danskin, encouraging authors to write drabbles, and the narrative invites readers to engage further by reading previous installments and supporting the author through subscriptions and Medium membership.

Opinions

  • The author expresses enthusiasm for the drabble format, inspired by JF Danskin's challenge.
  • There is an appreciation for the work of Shanice Lawton, with an invitation for her to participate in the drabble challenge.
  • The author humorously uses the situation of the would-be attacker to solicit support from readers, suggesting they help "buy a bandage" for the character by engaging with their other fictional tales.
  • The narrative seems to enjoy the element of surprise and the subversion of expectations, as indicated by Pike's delight in the attacker's false assumptions.

“Will you bore me to death with your diary?”

Pike smiled at the hooded woman, ignoring her slight and the short sword in her hand.

“Lenahla!” he chanted.

Immediately, the wanna-be attacker fell into a deep slumber. At first, she landed in a sitting position but toppled and hit her head on the table.

Diera peeked over the edge of the table under which she was hiding.

“That will hurt when she wakes up.”

Pike smiled, holding his spellbook in his right hand while padding a small warhammer with his left.

“I love it when they make false assumptions.”

Thanks to JF Danskin’s “A Drabble Challenge for Authors” challenge, I’m totally into drabbles again. :)

This led to the idea to publish a short story in drabble installments. This is part 2 of “Searching for Charity”. Read part one here.

I just read an incredible story by Shanice Lawton. Wow! Shanice, please join JF Danskin’s drabble challenge. I want to read what you come up with. ;)
