Expressive Writing Can Heal But Also Generate Income If Done Correctly
I’ve connected with expressive writers who heal through their content and earn substantial income from it.

Imagine a mystical world where writing can uplift your spirits and make you feel better, just like eating your favorite ice cream. This story is like a mental map to inspire and guide you in the beautiful world of expressive writing. I wrote the content of this piece years ago after an interesting conversation with a friend, Liz, who wanted to write to feel happier and wealthier.
Liz thought expressive writing was great for her mind and heart but not for her pocket. We laughed and discussed the details. So that funny idea inspired me to tell my students and readers how expressive writing can benefit our well-being and wealth if done correctly.
When I shared the ideas I discuss in this story, she was convinced and completed a book full of expressive writing with passion and started earning income. As a hobby, she did a podcast and even a local radio talk show reading her memoirs. Her hobby turned into an income stream, a unique value proposition.
Have you ever thought about how expressive writing can change your life? It’s a super skill that might help you feel better, be creative, be more productive, and even make some extra money, depending on your time and effort.
But sometimes, people don’t know how to start or where to find help. Like some of my proteges, they might think expressive writing is only for exceptional people.
That’s why I penned this story to show you that expressive writing is for anyone in ten minutes. It does not require investment, fancy qualifications, talent, or unique skills.
However, your skills can proliferate as you keep writing and getting feedback from your close friends or supportive readers.
I want to tell you about a talk I had with another protege who was curious about expressive writing. She was interested but also worried.
She thought expressive writing might make her feel worse as it will bring all her sad childhood memories. She was afraid of feeling her buried pain.
When I shared with her the profound significance of embracing emotions as a catalyst for healing, her heart resonated with the truth.
The idea that acknowledging and harnessing our feelings could hold the key to a transformative journey struck a chord within her, and a newfound understanding began to take root.
She also believed that expressive writing was reserved exclusively for renowned authors. Attentively, I listened to her concerns and reassured her that this approach is accessible to all, not just famous authors.
I likened expressive writing to a clandestine avenue to attain emotional well-being — a form of conversing with oneself through pen and paper or keyboard and screen.
Importantly, I emphasized that its embrace is open to anyone, regardless of their writing prowess or reputation.
When I explained how expressive writing can stimulate our brains, increase neurotransmitters and endorphins, and regulate our emotions, her reservations disappeared, and she felt better.
She understood that expressive writing could make us feel happy anytime and anywhere. She then shared her first expressive writing with me in an email after a euphoric moment.
In summary, she now believes that expressive writing helps us understand ourselves and strengthens our cognitive abilities.
It’s not just for famous writers but everyone, like you and me. Expressive writing can also help us make some money. Or more money for those who improve their skills and learn to capture readers' hearts.
My protege’s worries disappeared as we exchanged several emails. She became excited to make expressive writing habits. I gave her a 100-day challenge offering my mentorship to give her constant feedback.
She realized that expressive writing was like a magic tool that could help her feel happier and tell her own stories. By the end of 90 days, her manuscript was ready for publication. Then with this dopamine rush, she started her second book as she obtained great feedback from her initial readers.
And that’s why I’m sharing this story with you. To show you that expressive writing can make you feel better, be creative, and maybe even earn some pocket money.
Believing in yourself and allowing expressive writing to work its magic is an excellent start. So get ready to discover the fantastic world of expressive writing and see how it can bring joy and income and change your life.
I’d like to share my thoughts and experiences on expressive writing briefly and how it can be therapeutic and a source of income for writers looking to monetize their personal stories.
So, what’s this expressive writing all about?
Well, it’s like pouring our thoughts and feelings onto paper. Imagine talking to your journal about the ups and downs of life. By the way, only humans can do this. Sorry furry friends, even though you also have emotions.
Expressive writing is like a creative outlet for our thoughts, emotions, impulses, intuitions, senses, and sensations. It’s like having a heart-to-heart conversation with ourselves on paper. It is also a neurobics activity
When writers pour their feelings and experiences into their writing, it can be incredibly healing. It’s like releasing the weight off our shoulders and letting our emotions breathe.
When we write expressively, it’s not just a one-way conversation with ourselves. Others can relate to our stories, experiences, insights, intuitions, thoughts, and emotions.
It’s like connecting on a deeper level with our readers. This connection can create a ripple effect of understanding, empathy, compassion, and shared experiences.
So, here’s the exciting part: what if I told you that your healing journey through expressive writing could also put some money in your pocket? Yes, you heard that right.
There’s a market for authentic, relatable stories. People are hungry for content that resonates with them and that makes them feel like they’re not alone in their experiences.
By sharing our personal stories, we’re not just sharing our pain or joy — we’re sharing lessons, insights, and a piece of our heart. And guess what? People are willing to pay for that.
Whether it’s through blog subscriptions, Substack newsletters, e-books, online courses, podcasts, videos, or speaking engagements, our stories have value that can translate into income.
Now, let’s briefly talk about the authenticity factor theory. Self-rumination and self-reflection can bring authenticity. It’s the magic ingredient that makes our writing stand out.
When we write from the heart, it’s authentic, and authenticity is like a magnet for readers. They can sense when something is real and genuine, which keeps them returning for more.
Take Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild” as an example. Her expressive writing journey on the Pacific Crest Trail wasn’t just a personal feat.
Cheryl’s book became a bestseller and a successful movie. People were drawn to her story because it was raw, real, memorable, and relatable. You may watch the trailer here.
Your personal stories coming from your mind, heart, and soul are not just words on a page. They’re meaningful pieces that can impact others, heal their wounds, and even fill your wallet.
Expressive writing isn’t just a therapeutic tool. It’s a pathway to sharing, connecting, and monetizing our unique experiences. We can also make it a hobby and then turn it into an income stream, as Liz did.
From my experience, the best way to write expressively is after a meditation session and writing in a flow state.
Therefore I meditate three times daily and start writing expressively for at least 15 minutes. Then later, when I have more time, I start editing to prepare it for the public.
Like meditation, a flow state is a mindfulness practice. I see the flow state as essential for creativity, productivity, health improvement, happiness, and overall well-being, as I have experienced it for many years.
A flow state is a psychological concept that can be practiced by following mindfulness principles like living in the moment, clearing mental clutter, having self-compassion, focusing, paying attention to one task at a time, and smoothly switching tasks.
The flow state can change the content of our consciousness at a specific time to an optimally functioning mental and physical performance. Thus, the flow state benefits health and well-being by aligning our physical and mental energies.
The most significant benefits are stress relief, cognitive flexibility, and emotional regulation. However, people usually enter the flow state to create better, produce more with less effort, and perform well to achieve desired results.
So the flow state is ideal for work, study, and expressive writing as this state is directly related to our cognitive capabilities, like focus, attention, task switching, memory, and problem-solving.
I’ve had the privilege of connecting with numerous fellow writers who have embraced expressive content creation. What’s truly fascinating was how they’ve found their voice and a significant source of income through their heartfelt expressions.
These accomplished writers crafted words that resonated deeply with readers. In short, their words touched hearts and filled their pockets.
Imagine you are a writer sharing your personal stories of overcoming adversity, like a traveler recounting your awe-inspiring adventures or a poet painting vivid emotions with your verses, all while reaping the rewards of your craft.
Expressive writing is a place where heartfelt words are therapeutic and might be financially rewarding if done persistently and with passion. Your expressive writing can also contribute to creative non-fiction writing.
Let’s talk about the magic of written words for a moment.
Have you ever felt how writing and reading can make your heart feel lighter? It’s like a warm hug for our brains and hearts, soothing the worries and letting the good thoughts and feelings shine.
Expressive writing isn’t just a bunch of words on paper. It’s a bridge that connects our hearts, minds, and souls and takes us beyond our identity.
Imagine it as a metaphorical thread that ties us together, no matter where we’re from or who we are.
I call it a beyond-identity connection, the highest level of sharing our feelings and thoughts. Some people call this experience spirituality.
Expressive writing is a mindful adventure for our hearts and souls. It lets us pour out our thoughts and feelings like colorful paints on a canvas.
Expressive writing requires no rules and no limits — just you and your emotions having a meaningful conversation on paper, whether sad, frustrated, or happy.
I have a little secret to share. I love writing my journals with my two hands. It’s like a spiritual dance connecting my lower and higher self.
Sometimes I use my right hand (the dominant one) to ask questions and answer them by writing with my left hand (the less used one). It sounds funny, right?
But this trick opens up hidden corners of my mind and brings ideas from my heart and soul, taking me to my childhood. It is a cognitive trick that I taught to many students who benefited from it therapeutically, creatively, and productively.
This post isn’t just a bunch of fancy words — it’s my life story. For over fifty years, I’ve been on a journey with expressing writing, discovering its power to heal my wounds and connect with others meaningfully.
And you won’t believe what I’ve seen when I was teaching expressive writing. I met centenarians, artists, scientists, and even business wizards benefiting from the magic of expressive writing.
As I documented in a previous article, there is some scientific evidence of the various health benefits of expressive writing. Researchers have been studying how expressive writing helps our minds and bodies.
While studying cognitive science, I reviewed numerous scientific papers explaining the connection between expressive writing and mental health. Later I discovered that it is also good for physical health.
For example, as documented by Cambridge University, engaging in expressive writing can yield a plethora of favorable health outcomes, like:
fewer stress-related visits to the doctor, improved immune system functioning, reduced blood pressure, enhanced lung and liver function, decreased hospitalization periods, uplifted mood and affect, a heightened sense of psychological well-being, alleviated depressive symptoms prior to examinations, and diminished post-traumatic intrusion and avoidance symptoms.
You may check the details in the attached story.
Apart from the points I discussed before, one reason for writing expressively daily is to increase my cognitive reserves and activate neurogenesis.
The purpose of cognitive reserves is to activate and strengthen various brain regions and make them more flexible as we age. The goal is to slow cognitive aging and reduce the effects of neurodegenerative disorders like dementia.
Before you go, please give me one minute to inspire you.
As we wrap up this story, I want to leave you with insights and inspiration to turn your healing path into a golden path of possibilities.
Imagine your expressive words and personal stories becoming not just healers but also creators of income streams.
So, grasp that mental pen with determination and passion, let your fingers dance on the keyboard, and start a voyage where healing and success intertwine.
You nurture your soul with each word and sentence you write and sow the seeds of potential earnings.
Take this exciting journey where words become the alchemy of healing and transformation.
Picture a world where your emotions and thoughts weave a tapestry of comfort and insight for yourself and others.
Writing isn’t just about sharing. It’s also about embracing the value within you. You hold the key to unlocking a world of opportunities where heartfelt expression can also translate into financial rewards.
So, remember, you’re not only healing yourself through writing — you’re also nurturing a garden of prosperity by adding value and meaning. Your heart is the inkwell, and your mind is the quill.
With each stroke, you’re penning a story of growth, healing, and perhaps even monetary fulfillment. You need to start today and write daily, even in your most painful moments.
No matter whether you are happy, sad, anxious, depressed, or angry, keep writing and leave editing to later or to others to help you.
Once you master the art of crafting emotional, meaningful, insightful, and inspiring words, you’ll find yourself in a position to delegate tasks like editing and marketing to others.
As your writing prowess grows, so does your ability to create content that resonates deeply with your audience, making it possible to entrust other aspects of the process to capable hands.
As we part ways, know that your words are powerful and healing, your stories are valuable to your readers, and your journey is worth every heartfelt word.
So, embrace the magic of expressive writing, and let your healing journey pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future.
