“Don’t Trouble Trouble Until Trouble Troubles You!”
The act of accepting and not making it worse
This phrase does not sound proper in an English sentence but has a deep and wise meaning.
I learnt this many years ago when I was still an Engineering Assistant in a multinational semiconductor company. We were working to maintain the test machines for the electronic components that the factory manufactured.
Some machines would occasionally stop and hang up for no rhyme or reason. We had to attend to the problem when the system stopped. All the operators will wait for us to repair the system.
My senior colleagues would power down the machine, take out a particular circuit board, and then re-insert it. The tester will be powered up to restart its operation again.
When I asked them what could have caused the problem, they shrugged their shoulders and said, “Don’t trouble trouble until trouble troubles you”.
You see, within the system, there are many intricate wires and electronic cards. My senior was trying to tell me: “Don’t make it worse. Just manage the problem, don’t create more trouble”.
It became a catchphrase. Don’t make any problem worse than the current situation. In the factory, we had to get the machines up and running, not shut them down for major repairs. We cannot afford that kind of downtime.
As I thought about this phrase, it made much practical sense. In many scenarios in life, we may have to accept the imperfect and move on. If you go deep into a problem, you may unfold an even bigger problem.
Hence the wisdom of “Don’t trouble trouble until trouble troubles you”.
It is to be wise and accepting in problem-solving if it does not compromise your life and safety.
