Don’t Set New Year’s Resolutions

Do This Instead

I wasn’t planning on taking on many challenges, but couldn’t resist this writing one from Keeley Schroder. My writing muscles could do with a boost, so why not get started early? Whether I will get through them all is another matter, as there are some risky ones in there.

So let’s get started with Day 1. The most laughable New Year’s Resolution you’ve ever made

Back in the dark ages, I set resolutions. Yes, I know! What was I even thinking? 🤦🏽‍♀️

I want to tell you mine were something more original but sadly I have none to share. It was the usual aim to drop a dress size in 13½ days or less which was down the pan faster than the toilet flush.

I even joined a gym one year. Upon realising the error of my resolve, I tried to cancel my gym membership. They pointed out that I had signed a contract for the full year.

I hated going to the gym.

No, let me rephrase that I hated going to that gym!

I felt handcuffed to the equipment now against my will.

But I had to get my money’s worth.

So, I went. I glared at everyone each time I swiped in with my costly membership card. Like the glaring sun had hit me between the eyes, cos I was blinded when I signed that contract. Oh, those visions of a fitter, more shapely body.

I can’t remember if I lost any weight, but I’m placing my bet that I didn’t. I was usually so angry after each visit, that I probably ate away any progress made.

Let’s face it, resolutions are flimsy, full of misery and easily broken and that is why I stopped setting them over 10 years ago. (I checked my journals for reference, just in case you are wondering.)

I began setting goals. My goals used to be to travel more, write a book, and have time freedom. I’ve achieved the first two but the last one has been more elusive so far.

Stop Setting Resolutions — Do This Instead

What has worked for me over the past few years is setting my word for the year.

One year it was Action. To remind me of course to take action on the multitude of ideas that threatened to explode in my head.

Last year my word was Hope. And boy did I need it.

This year the word that keeps coming to mind is STRENGTH.

When I think of the word STRENGTH, not just physical strength, but also inner strength, it reminds me that I can get through whatever is put before me.

Each past experience has made me stronger. I gather that inner strength to carry me forward this year.
