Depression Hates Kindness — Life Is Watching

I have given so much of myself, that I am running out of me.

This is the sign I saw in the sky as I sat on the Greyhound bus. Image by Annelise Lords

I have given so much of myself, that I am running out of me.

This piece is for the givers, who constantly give kind, positive advice that heals and helps.

The ones who deny themselves what they need so you can have it. They will wait for the next time that didn’t rebound.

The ones who sacrifice their future, hopes, dreams, etc., so you can get yours. And didn’t get theirs.

The ones who denied themselves love, life, hope, understanding, forgiveness, and all of the positive elements humanity needs to live.

Make sure you get all of them.

The giver who stayed hungry so you can get enough.

The ones who hand you their last dollar just for a smile.

The ones who plant trees of inspiration, motivation, love, kindness, hope, understanding, gratitude, etc. everywhere they go hoping to make your life and our world better.

Depression has been visiting and staying with the cold weather. It’s winter, so it’s here to stay until Spring.

Every day I fight to survive.

Why must we give so much, yet sometimes it seems as if life has forgotten about us?

On the Greyhound bus, I felt sorry for myself. I almost missed it, arriving late. The driver was kind. He let me in. Someone came a minute later and didn’t come in.

Life has its ways of reminding us of our values.

Inside the bus was cold. Everyone was prepared with pillows and blankets. I was overdressed. An hour later the bus stopped. A young man boarded, unprepared for the weather. He was dressed in black T-shirt, black shorts, and sneakers, carrying an empty backpack. My instincts alerted me; he was fleeing something. He hurried down the aisle, hugging himself. He sat behind me, and as the bus drove away he called out shivering, his teeth chattering, “Anyone who has a coat or socks could give me please, I will pay for it.”

Depression hurts so much; it often robs us of our will to be kind. I was so focused on my self-pity, that I almost missed the opportunity to help someone in need.

I forgot depression and sadness and went into my suitcase and gave him a pair of socks, a pullover, and a hat. The socks warmed his feet. The hat warmed his head. But the pullover was too small. He offered me money.

I said, “I can’t take your money. I have sons who might need help somewhere. At sometime. Pass this on.”

He thanked me many times. No one else tried to help.

Sitting behind him as he wrapped the pullover around parts of his body to keep warm, I wondered.

I almost didn’t make this journey. I should have left yesterday.

What is life trying to say to me?

You add kindness to our world today. That is your gift to earth.

Then I realized. Constantly giving of yourself, without renewing yourself, is when depression visits.

Renewal will keep depression at bay.

Wow!

Giving to the ones who need it the most, who show gratitude, will help to renew our faith in humanity.

And that is enough.

I must be me, and I have days when I need a reminder.

I got it today in one small act of kindness.

I pray he gets warm as he curls up on the seat behind me.

No matter how bad you think your situation is, life will send someone to show you the value of gratitude.

I am warm.

He isn’t.

I have a lot to be grateful for.

The best gift you can give anyone is of yourselves.

Today, I learned that Depression hates kindness, but life is watching your acts of kindness and will renew your hope and spirit.

A kind action can push Depression away.

Please, be kind to each other. It can heal a sad heart.
