Decision Made — My First Digital Content Project (and the Tools to Create It)

Woohoo! “cough cough” I mean… Caution — Work In Progress.

Jumping with joy for finally making a decision. Illustration by Author in MidJourney.

I finally decided on my first digital content project…

Activity books!

Not as easy as no-content books, but I feel like it’s an excellent experiment for using several online tools for an end-to-end experiment and having a final product that I’m happy with selling.

I’m starting with a children’s coloring book, then moving into a children’s activity (puzzle) book. And will do both types of books for adults as well.

Tools

MidJourney

I’m using MidJourney for the pictures and cover art.

I already had a subscription to it, so it doesn’t count toward my $100 project limit.

I’m obsessed with MidJourney — and the illustrations and photos I’m creating as a non-artist.

If you missed it, here’s my list of tips from my rabbit hole into MidJourney:

Canva

I’m a huge fan of Canva and recently upgraded to the Pro account (mostly so I could remove backgrounds and use the Pro templates).

I’m using Canva to bring the pictures and art made in MidJourney into a final illustration.

I already have a subscription to Canva Pro, so it doesn’t count toward my $100 project limit.

Curious about my project parameters? Here are the details:

Book Bolt

I’m going back and forth about using Canva or Book Bolt for creating my actual book pages.

I love the idea of using Canva for the price (I’m already paying for it!), but I only have so much time in the week for my experiments and Book Bolt makes it extremely easy to create the books with the correct sizes, templates, and activity puzzles. And it’s built to load into Amazon KDP.

I may pay for a monthly subscription and see how it goes for this project.

The budget will have a hit of $19.99 a month for the Pro version (includes puzzles) but will simplify my process for my first books.

Amazon KDP

The main player in the self-publishing game, I’m going with Amazon KDP for these books.

I’m not sure if I’ll use a pen name (or a company name) for these books. I haven’t thought that far into the future of my content creation journey.

Does anyone have any experience with pen names or branding on Amazon? Interested in your experiences!

Caution — Creation in Progress

I’m excited and (constantly) nervous about making this a reality.

For (a lot of time) and $20 for Book Bolt, this seems like a great experiment to tackle over the next month or two.

More updates to come and all prior experience tips are welcome!
