My Digital Project Journey — The List of Possible Products
So many ideas — it’s tough to be patient and start with only one!
As a long-time digital product lurker and a short-time creator, some of the digital projects I’m taking on are extremely common.
But not to me.
And possibly not for you.
Even if they’re common already, that begs the question of whether there’s still an opportunity to make money in these spaces — or where to bring in new technology and tools (like AI) to improve the processes.
The list is not all-inclusive of the projects I may take on (and are subject to change in the future), but more of a list of my interests in the digital content creation space.
I’ve also listed what I expect (us) to learn — as this is the ultimate goal of the experiments.
Let’s dive in!
Low-Content KDP Books
A crowded space — but hyped regularly in every content creation channel (Medium and YouTube are no exceptions!) — I’m curious based on the end-to-end creation of these books.
These are usually the journals, notebooks, and planners — where the inside pages are just repeated — they still need to be created and loaded into KDP.
Expected Learnings:
- Using tools like Canva, MidJourney, Book Bolt, and Amazon KDP.
- End-to-end process for generating digital books.
Medium-Content KDP Books
Recently replaced low-content books as the most hyped digital asset to create on YouTube (at least based on everyone I follow on YouTube — LOL).
These take a bit more work to create — but still a very crowded field, especially with apps like Book Bolt which have streamlined the process (for a fee).
These are puzzle, coloring, and activity books.
Expected Learnings:
- More advanced usage of tools like Canva, MidJourney, Book Bolt, and Amazon KDP.
- Reviewing data on competitors in Amazon KDP and topics/types of books to create.
High-Content KDP, Kindle, and Gumroad Books
Not necessarily the hardest to create — especially for those great writers in the Medium universe! — but the most time-consuming of the digital books.
These are actual books, though they may be short (100-page) non-fiction books to full novels.
I love writing and (like 99% of the world) I’ve dreamt of writing a book for years. I have started some outlines and drafts, but never finished the process.
I hope to complete the book publication with my newly learned Amazon KDP skills — from earlier projects — and learn how to better use Gumroad.
This would also be an opportunity to learn how to submit a book to Amazing Kindle and create an audiobook.
Expected Learnings:
- Writing and editing process for a full book.
- Learn to use Gumroad more effectively.
- Learn to create Kindle eBooks and possibly audiobook recordings.
Guides and Templates on Etsy and Gumroad
I was working on a Canva template the other day for an upcoming trip itinerary and thought to myself, “Wow, this is pretty good, I wonder if I could sell it?”
Another area that has a lot of “how-to” videos on YouTube, as well as mentioned a lot in Medium articles, selling digital assets on Etsy and Gumroad are ways to expand your audience reach and accessibility of your creations.
I do have a Gumroad book already, I didn’t spend a lot of time on the product details and I’ve already forgotten everything I learned at the time, but I’m a complete novice regarding Etsy.
To be honest, when I think of Etsy I still picture flowery patterns and homemade goods. It’ll be interesting to take a digital product perspective to the marketplace.
Expected Learnings:
- Using Canva to create templates and guides.
- Creating accounts and selling products through Etsy and Gumroad.
Faceless YouTube Channels
This one is fascinating to me as a natural introvert.
I’m creating a YouTube channel for my project experiments with my face, but the idea of sharing information and creating videos WITHOUT my face is extremely high.
I’m not sure what topics I want to focus on, but I expect to learn a lot about creating videos, thumbnails, and catchy titles.
Expected Learnings:
- Using tools like ChatGPT, Canva (for video creation), YouTube, and iMovie.
- End-to-end process for generating videos.
YouTube Shorts
I broke YouTube Shorts out as a separate line, as there’s so much content (i.e. hype) about making money from these.
I’m not sure that’s still possible (or ever was true) but I’m interested in using AI tools to create these in bulk. My future brain thinks of these as add-ons to the full-length video channels that I want to start.
Expected Learnings:
- Advanced use of ChatGPT, Canva, and YouTube.
- Reviewing competitors and the marketplace for short-content videos.
Online Courses
I like to think of myself as a natural teacher (at least on the topics I’m passionate about), so creating an online course is just an extension of myself.
However, the idea of my knowledge being shared (and possibly ridiculed by nefarious commenters) has held me back from both online courses and my YouTube fame. If you couldn’t tell, this last one is a joke! :)
I’m not sure of the topics or tools yet on this one — probably toward the last of the projects I’ll tackle — but I do want to experiment with them soon.
Expected Learnings:
- Tools and processes for online course creation.
Time to start Project #1!
Not every type of digital product is listed above, but it’s hard enough to zero in on the product I want to create for Project #1!
I’m also not the most creative person, so I would love to hear about digital content and products not listed above that you’re working on or would suggest I try.
My next step is to pick one and start the experiment — no more excuses or time fillers!
