Creating, Experimenting, and Documenting My Digital Product Journey — The Initial Plan

I keep reminding myself this is a side project…

I’m excited to focus on digital product creation — but I need some boundaries or this is going to take over my life!

My plan has to work as a side project to my 9–5. So I need to limit the amount of time working on the products, as well as the time documenting and sharing the progress.

Money is not the purpose — experimenting, learning, and sharing will be the goal. (Any money will be welcome! But I’m not setting any type of expectation.)

I’m using projects and products interchangeably now but the digital product creation process is the “project” — where each of these processes (i.e. projects) may have multiple products produced. (Wow, that’s a lot of P-words!)

With that in mind, here is where the plan sits today:

The Project Parameters

I want to establish some minimum boundaries for the projects, but also not be so restrictive that I find myself stressed, overwhelmed, and quitting.

1/ Use YouTube or Medium posts to pick a digital product to try.

  • Need to be micro, lean, and online only.
  • Need to have an end product to sell (or give away for free).

2/ Experiment with end-to-end product creation.

  • 30–60 days per project.
  • Intend to spend no more than 1–2 hours a day on the experiment.
  • If ongoing, require no more than 2 hours a week of upkeep.

3/ Use tools I already have available, or free or low-cost.

  • Max $100 cost per experiment.
  • This includes any costs associated with the documentation process for each project.
  • If ongoing, require minimum cost for upkeep and must be profitable.

4/ Need to fit my current life (but with room to grow).

  • Flexible time commitments (vacations and living life are priorities for me).

The Documentation

I plan to document my journey from end to end.

What products I’m tackling, the tools I’m using, the highs and lows, and the ultimate results from it all.

I intend to share the updates on Medium, YouTube, and my newsletter. (And no, I don’t have videos on the YouTube channel yet! I’m just starting…)

What I plan to document and share.

  • Project and tools.
  • Progress updates.
  • Successes and failures.
  • The launches and products.
  • The analytics, summaries, and dollars.

The parts I share on which platforms will be determined as I go. (I have to balance that pesky day job.)

Sounds too simple…I might regret it.

There you have it, my initial plan.

I’m sure things will change as I go, but that’s part of life.

My biggest fear is that I’ll be overwhelmed and quit, but I’m going to limit as much of the stress as possible and make this a fun experience.

I love to learn and try new tools, and that will be the North Star of this entire endeavor.

Let me know if there are ideas that you’d be interested in me exploring or what pieces you’d be interested in me sharing!

Give me one clap or fifty! Clapping more or less tells me the content that connects and is useful to you.

Leave your honest comment, please! This tells me your opinion, experiences, and thoughts — which helps me write more content for you.
