Summary

Apple Vision Pro users are reporting cracks appearing on the outer screen of their headsets, causing concern about the durability of the $3,500 USD wearable.

Abstract

Some Apple Vision Pro users have noticed ugly cracks appearing on the outer screen of their headsets after light use, leading to speculation about the device's durability. Some users have reported that cracks appeared while the headset was in its case, charging, leading to theories that the headset might not go into sleep mode properly when charging, causing it to heat up, expand, and crack the screen. Other theories suggest that the aluminum frame might bend from tightening the straps, or that the glass could crack from extreme temperature changes. While some users have had their cracked devices replaced for free, others have had to pay the AppleCare+ deductible or even the full cost of replacing a cracked glass cover. The article suggests that early adopters of new tech products may end up being unintentional beta-testers for products that are not fully perfected yet.

‘Crackgate’ Is Here With Apple Vision Pro’s Seemingly Cracking Out of Nowhere

You’d think after spending $3,500 USD, your headset might be somewhat durable.

In some past stories, I’ve talked about various VR and AR stuff. You can check those out at the end of this post. Today, I want to chat about the latest buzz around Apple’s newest gadget, the Apple Vision Pro.

All of our devices, even the ones we carry around every day, can break. But you’d expect a $3,500 USD wearable to be tough, right? Well, some Apple Vision Pro users are finding out that might not be the case. They’ve noticed ugly cracks on the outer screen after light use.

Surprisingly, many users treated their devices carefully. Some say cracks appeared while the headset was in its case, charging. This led to speculation on the r/Vision Pro subreddit that the headset might not go into sleep mode properly when charging, causing it to heat up, expand, and crack the screen.

Another theory is that the aluminum frame might bend from tightening the straps, or that the glass could crack from extreme temperature changes.

While some got their cracked devices replaced for free, one user had to pay the AppleCare+ deductible, which is $299 USD for accidental damage on the Apple Vision Pro. Ouch. Without AppleCare+, replacing a cracked glass cover could cost $799 USD.

Instead of spending money on an overpriced head-mounted fishbowl that might crack, you could buy something that can do more and costs less, just saying.

It’s normal for new devices to have some issues at first, but considering the high price of the Apple Vision Pro, these cracked screens are causing quite a stir, with some calling it “Crackgate.”

Final Words

Money doesn’t always buy top-notch quality with new tech products. If it’s new, shiny, and hyped, you might end up being an unintentional beta-tester for a product that’s not fully perfected yet.

Early adopters get the latest tech first, but there can be downsides. That’s just how it goes. Or, in this case, how it cracks.
