Contax Carl Zeiss Planar T*45mm F2 ~~~Probably the best Kit Lenses

"Sharp" seems to be the best synonym for the G45.

In the film era, the Contax G45 was pretty much one of the first choices for everyone who chose to enter the Contax G1/G2 system. Although it was sold as a kit lens set, its performance shone through. The G28/G45/G90, with its three lenses in one, was a stepping stone into optical lens design Biogon / Planar / Sonnar.

The G1/G2 leaflet of the year

About Planar Optical Design

Originally designed by Paul Rudolph for Zeiss in 1896

The traditional Planar lens is made up of two sets of lenses symmetrical to the aperture. Since a similar design first appeared on Gauss telescopic lenses, they are sometimes referred to as Gauss lenses, and all brands of standard lenses benefit from Planar.

The traditional design of Planar has made it particularly suitable for standard lenses. Still, due to market influences, standard lenses are often the cheapest specification. Therefore not all Planar lenses reach the ‘optical limits of what is humanly possible due to cost constraints (especially in lens material). Generally, Planar standard lenses are not an as high resolution as enthusiasts would expect at fully open aperture, but a two-step reduction in aperture results in a significant improvement in image quality. Depending on the cost and design of the lens, Planar standard lenses can have different effects.

The G45 has an optical structure with six lenses and four groups, the closest distance of 0.5 metres, a minimum aperture of F16 and a weight of 190 grams. Very high resolution, very smooth image field, minimal barrel distortion

Operation and performance on digital

The lens is an excellent example of how to use the lens in a digital camera. The digital machine, an overall feeling of good a lot, the contrast is almost low, the bokeh transition is not too hard, sharp in-focus out-of-focus bokeh soft, fresh and bright, full of stereoscopic sense. The full open aperture is close to the working value, reduce the aperture to F4, the image will be more ideal, full open aperture will have visible dark corners, F2.8/F4 dark corners will disappear. Because of the flat rear lens, the performance is good even on unthinned bodies. Most of the photos in this article were also taken with the A7R2 thin filter body 42mp, and the resolution is definitely sufficient. The G45 with the thinned lens has a better image quality and is more transparent than the FE55/1.8, which I think is sharper than the FE55/1.8.

About Techart Auto-focus Adapter

Basically, the Techart AFG autofocus ring is a daylight limited adapter ring. In sunny conditions, the focusing speed is comparable to the original. However, once you go to low light or indoor, you will have a pull box, focus accuracy drops dramatically, etc.. The closest focus distance is also pushed from 0.5M to about 0.7M. The overall operation is a bit temperamental in the A7R3 / A7M3 III body and with EYE-AF and other functions. If you can adapt, it will be a good photography tool. I think G45 + AFG + A7M3 focusing speed/response has been very close to the performance of the Contax G2.

SHOTEN GTE Contax G Autofocus adapter for Sony FE cameras in 2021

Low light

G45+AFG+A73 / Low light, sudden situation, I can not rely on autofocus for three consecutive shots
Finally, I also needed the meow to stop in order to complete the shooting XD

The following photos were edited by Capture One Pro 20 with simple modifications:

G45 Bokeh is point-like, aperture will be hexagonal bokeh, bilinear is not too obvious

Street Photography

The G45 with Techart AFG adapter is not really suitable for street photography. The response may not keep up with the sudden moment, but if slowly SNAP SHOT is actually quite available. The author is accustomed to using F5.6 as the default aperture value for street photography

Digital age, G45 in sharpness, bokeh, stability in all aspects are considered a good student, but may be too stable performance, sometimes feel too flat, a little boring, but at this price point, or is considered a very high CP value of an all-round standard, personally like G45 even FE55/1.8…

I have repeatedly considered the idea of taking an additional G45 and converting it to an M Mount so that it would be easier to connect to different systems. The focus stability of the AFM is also better than that of the AFG. The problem is that there are really too many 50mm options on hand. I have thought, if all the equipment out, only one affordable 50mm standard head left, I may choose G45 to change.

If you like this post, feel free to give me a pat on the back and let me know you like it too XD

You can also follow me by pressing the Follow button, but unfortunately, you can’t set up a sneak preview XD. If you are willing to pay USD 1 per month for a cup of coffee, you can support me in my “Words are worth it, photos are worth it”. I have been writing blogs for more than ten years so that you may have read my Minolta articles, other equipment and photo tips in the past. It is not easy to maintain this interest in blogging. Today, many photographers like to shoot youtube or use pictures instead of writing, so in-depth introduction and evaluation may be a chore for many people. Still, I believe that words and photos have a specific value. I have many more pictures and photographs that I would like to share with you, and a little financial contribution from you would help me go further or write.
