In photography, color measurement can be used to help ensure proper white balance and color correction. By understanding the color of light, photographers can avoid taking photos with an unwanted color cast.
In product design, color measurement can help ensure that products are consistent with each other and with the intended design. For example, a product designer may want to match the color of a car’s interior to the exterior.
There are digital tools called ‘color pickers’ that can help with this process by providing a color’s numerical values. Adobe, Canva, and other design software have color pickers built into their interface that use hex and RGB codes. These codes are based on the tristimulus values of the colors.
The three most common methods are tristimulus values, various color models, and colorimetry.
Tristimulus values are the amounts of three primary colors (red, green, and blue) that are needed to produce a given color. The three primary colors are combined in different proportions to create all other colors.
The most common color models are the RGB (red, green, blue) and CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color models. These models are used in color printing.

Color measurement also has many industrial applications. For example, color measurement is used to control the color of paint, fabric, and other materials. It is also used in quality control to ensure that products meet color standards.
