Are You on Medium to Make Money?

Stop right there, it won’t work.

I’ll write from a non-professional point of view.

In summary, if you’re starting from scratch and looking for a way to make money online, you would better invest the time in learning how to code and become a programmer.

From a writing perspective, it’s worth it.

  1. There’s a large community of writers here with whom you can easily interact. Say hi in the comments!
  2. You can get inspired by them. Maybe find some writing buddies/editing partners (I edit one of yours, you edit one of mine). And share the ups and downs of being a writer with them. In case you’re wondering, more downs than ups.
  3. There are many publications, and some have strict editorial rules. It’s a way to get (free) feedback on your writing. It’s a 0/1 type of feedback, but still. If you’re accepted, your writing was good enough. If not, try again.

From a money perspective, it can be worth it (most likely, it won’t).

Under conditions:

  1. You live in the right country (not all countries are available for the partner program).
  2. You write (or can write) about what Medium readers want. So no poetry, no fiction, but rather self-improvement, money, celebrities, sex, etc.
  3. You write in a way that’s entertaining enough.

But it’s a bit of a lottery ticket. Even if you’re a professional writer, I would guess Upwork, Fiverr, and others are better ways to make money.

Conclusion

If writing is a passion or a hobby, Medium is an excellent place to develop your skills and make some money for a few coffees per month. If you’re lucky enough, good enough, and consistent enough (rather years of almost daily posting, not months), you could develop your skills and make a few thousand dollars per month.

If writing is NOT a passion or a hobby, the hourly rate is ridiculous. You would better invest the time in learning how to code and become a programmer.

Smillew is a writer, a tweeter, and a serial masturbator. He also enjoys yoga and meditation. Some he does well, some not so well, but he still tries them all.
