Lexus plans to release an electric supercar with a manual gearbox around 2030.

Abstract

Lexus has announced plans to release an electric supercar with a manual gearbox around 2030. The car will be a successor to the V10-powered Lexus LFA and is expected to accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just around 2 seconds. The manual variant is currently being looked into by Lexus, and the project has progressed to focused development using a research prototype based on the UX 300e compact SUV, equipped with a gear lever and a clutch pedal. The chief engineer of the Lexus Electrified division, Takashi Watanabe, stated that the software-based system can be programmed to reproduce the driving experience of different vehicle types, letting the driver choose their preferred mapping.

A manual electric supercar? Sign me up!

I am a car enthusiast joining and enjoying car shows a lot. It has been an entertaining hobby for me. We talk a lot about cars with friends. Cars are part of my gaming engagement. I also follow car news and events on social media.

In this short post, I briefly share a piece of recent news and share my perspectives on it to create awareness for car lovers.

Recently, Lexus revealed a concept for an electric supercar they plan to release around 2030. It will be somewhat of a successor to the V10-powered Lexus LFA. But most interesting of all, this EV will incorporate a manual gearbox.

Apparently, this “halo sports car” will accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just around 2 seconds. Additionally, the manual variant is currently being looked into by Lexus.

As you may know, EVs currently have one or two gears, which begs the question, how does Lexus plan on making a half-decent manual transmission for an EV?

Lexus stated the following.

The project “has progressed to focused development using a research prototype based on the UX 300e compact SUV, equipped with a gear lever and a clutch pedal.”

The chief engineer of the Lexus Electrified division, Takashi Watanabe, also stated the following.

“From the outside, this vehicle is as quiet as any other BEV (battery electric vehicle). But the driver is able to experience all the sensations of a manual transmission vehicle. It is a software-based system, so it can be programmed to reproduce the driving experience of different vehicle types, letting the driver choose their preferred mapping.”

This statement sounds very interesting to me since I can’t really conceptualize how a program can simulate a manual transmission.

Will it simulate a stall or even a rough gear change by lunging the car? Either way, I'm really excited to see how the final product actually works.
