Are Thoughts Illusions?

Don’t believe everything you think

Guest Prompt Week 2, Day 1: “We are not our thoughts.”

Imagine de Paul Stachowiak de la Pixabay

We are not our thoughts, but they are part of who we are, and they can certainly create illusions in our realities. If that makes no sense, then let me explain further.

We have countless thoughts running through our minds every day, up to 60,000 based on a survey done by the National Science Foundation. According to the survey, up to 80% of them are negative thoughts, and 95% are repetitive. In my not so expert opinion, that is way too many unnecessary thoughts running through our minds.

The results of that survey might be shocking, but are they even correct? The survey was conducted back in 2005, so I can only assume that the number of thoughts have increased beyond 60k because I think we have gotten more self-absorbed and more consumed by our external realities.

With that many thoughts running through our minds daily, I have concluded that many of us have lost all concept of reality. And since I believe that reality itself is an illusion, then I can only conclude that our thoughts are as well. Thoughts are merely fleeting moments in our overactive minds.

If someone is creating 60,000+ thoughts in their mind per day, it indicates that their mind is undisciplined and needs to be managed. Typically, most negative thoughts are triggered from fear and by our egos, and they can also derive from the lack of connection with knowing who we really are.

Therefore, we can’t believe all our thoughts because most of them are irrelevant, but what we can do is take control and change them. We all have the ability to switch our thoughts from negative to positive ones.

Taking control of our thoughts can create a more harmonious and peaceful life. For example, whenever I find negative thoughts creeping into my mind, I usually pause and immediately shift that thought. At times, I have self-talked to control my negative thinking, and I have found this practice to be very effective. It has brought me more peace and has created a deeper connection to discovering who I am.

We can’t believe everything that we think, but we can manage our thoughts. Our thoughts can create our reality, therefore we can choose to think our way to inner peace or choose to think our way into a life filled with chaos. The choice is ours to make.

Sujona Chatterjee I am grateful for this prompt because it provided the space for me to examine my own thoughts. I am in a place now where I am aware of my thoughts, and I have taken control of and have managed them the best way I can. Do I believe that our thoughts are illusions? Indeed, I believe that they can be because we can surely lose control of our thoughts and create false realities.

My thoughts are with those who might be suffering or who are having a hard time coping with all the craziness of this external world.

Thank you all for reading. And thank you Diana C. for creating the space so that we all can revisit stages in our lives, tell our stories, grow, and heal. KTHT has been a rollercoaster, one that I don’t mind riding.
