Summary

Antonio Brown's abrupt departure from an NFL game has sparked discussions about his mental health and the potential impact of CTE from his football career, while also highlighting societal double standards in addressing mental health issues, particularly among Black men.

Abstract

The article discusses the unexpected behavior of NFL player Antonio Brown during a game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New York Jets, where he removed his jersey and pads, performed jumping jacks, and left the field. This incident has raised concerns about Brown's mental well-being, with speculation that he may be suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) due to a previous head injury. The author emphasizes the seriousness of CTE, citing a study where nearly all examined brains of former football players showed signs of the disease. The article also criticizes the public's reaction, noting that Black men often do not receive the same empathy and support as others might in similar situations, and instead are labeled negatively. The author calls for understanding and assistance for Brown, advocating for a focus on his mental health rather than ridicule or dismissal.

Opinions

  • The author believes that Antonio Brown's actions are indicative of deeper mental health issues, possibly linked to CTE from a past head injury during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
  • There is a critical view of how the public, especially on social media, responds to such incidents, with a tendency to make light of the situation through jokes and memes rather than addressing potential mental health crises.
  • The author points out a racial bias, suggesting that if Antonio Brown were a white woman, the public response would likely be more sympathetic, potentially including fundraising efforts for her well-being.
  • The article underscores the importance of not dismissing Brown as a troublemaker but rather recognizing the need for compassion and professional help for his apparent mental health struggles.
  • The author advocates for a broader understanding of the impact of CTE on former football players, referencing the high percentage of cases found in postmortem examinations.
  • There is an implied call to action for society to approach mental health issues with more sensitivity and seriousness, particularly when it comes to Black men in the public eye.

Antonio Brown Has Lost His Mind

This brother needs some serious help

Some real unfortunate stuff happened yesterday where basically Antonio Brown walked off the football field which was kind of surprising. I, like many others, was rooting for him. He’s incredibly talented, a Super Bowl Champion, and one of the greatest wide receivers the NFL has ever scene. In case you didn’t know what happened, during the middle of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets game, Antonio had a complete meltdown on the bench in which he, later on, took off his jersey, his football pads, and his t-shirt ran to the end-zone, did jumping jacks, gave the fans a peace sign, then left the arena. It was one of the craziest things I have ever seen in a football game in my entire life. Now, I’m not a sports analyst. I’m not going to get on here and pretend that I’m Stephen A. Smith and break this down from a sports perspective. To me, this goes a little bit deeper than that — mental health.

First issue is CTE. Antonio Brown probably has brain damage. I think that it had to do with this hit he took from Vontaze Burfict, who played for the Cincinnati Bengals, in 2016 when he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

There is a study that shows that about 99% of all the brains they examine from former football players had CTE. Now, remember, these were brains that were submitted after they died. For example, Dave Duerson, who was a former safety for the Chicago Bears and a former NFL Man of the Year, shot himself in the chest. He, later on, asked his family to please examine his brain because he thinks he might have issues with CTE. This stuff is real. So you can’t tell me that Antonio Brown is not showing any symptoms of brain damage.

Right now, people are on the internet making jokes and memes about the situation. Unfortunately, when it comes to Black men, we don’t get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to these types of situations. Instead of talking about his mental health, we just automatically go to him being a bad influence, a troublemaker, cancer, etc. If this was a white woman, there would be a GoFundMe account set up for her. So again, I’m not here to make fun of him, I’m here to simply wish him well I hope this brother gets the help he needs.
