Another Writing Challenge: 20 Articles in 30 Days

A Plan To Increase Revenue And Followers

Photo by Jess Bailey on Unsplash

A third Medium writing challenge for the year! Oh boy.

I felt I did not achieve all I set out to in my previous challenges. So third times the charm, right?

This time I am keeping it smaller. Last time I went big. So big I became overwhelmed and overworked. I failed to keep in mind that whilst I LOVE writing on Medium it is a side hobby for me. I have a content writing business, nursing shifts and two young children to occupy my time too.

I would love to spend all my time on Medium. It is just not possible!

What is the challenge this time?

Last time I did the 30 in 30 to 30 challenge. It was a lot! It was based on David Majisters original writing challenge…that has now gained its own publication and many followers. He has helped develop an amazing community of writers, all dedicated to writing challenges and supporting and encouraging each other.

This time I am challenging myself to submit 20 articles in 30 days.

Why only 20 articles in 30 days, I hear you ask?

Well, hopefully this is more achievable than 30 articles in 30 days to all different publications.

I am aiming to submit 5 articles per week. It doesn’t have to be a different publication every time and I am keeping it simple!

My pledge is 20 articles in 30 days, to any publication.

Even if that means I double up publications somewhere. Should be easy, right?

Challenge rules:

I am keeping it simple and easy this month. KISS is the motto!

The rules of this challenge:

  • 20 articles in 30 days.
  • Take the weekends off — important for mental wellbeing and work/life balance.

This equals 5 articles per week, which I will:

  • Submit 3 articles to publications
  • 1 to Coffee & Scribbles (my new publication)
  • 1 to RMWriting (another publication for my content writing website and all things freelance writing)

I know, submitting twice a week to my own publication sounds a little like cheating, but I still have to draft, write, edit and find images! Plus it is a great way to build up the content on those publications.

Goals of this challenge:

#1 Goal — complete the challenge.

My first goal is to actually complete a challenge! I was unable to complete the last 2 challenges I set myself. A big part of this is because I believe I bit off more than I could handle at the time. Between parenting, nursing shifts, my content writing business and the writing challenges I was struggling with time and motivation.

That is why I have set the goal of 20 articles in 30 days, instead of 30 articles. This is a smaller, more achievable goal.

#2 Goal — increase engagement and followers.

I thoroughly enjoy the Medium community. There are many amazing writers and readers here, and I look forward to increasing my engagement with them and gaining new followers.

#3 Goal — publish 20 more articles (I mean, obviously!)

My big goal is to have 100 articles published in Medium by October, which is when I will have been writing here for 1 year. This smaller challenge will help me on my way to that.

#4 Goal — increase revenue.

Just like most people, my aim is to increase my revenue from Medium. I have heard and read that it is getting harder and harder to receive an income from Medium, however I am not giving up yet.

My roadmap to success.

No challenge is complete without a plan!

And my favourite saying is “failure to plan is planning to fail”. Benjamin Franklin

My number one tool for planning and to help build my roadmap to success is my trusty old spreadsheet.

I have laid out 20 article ideas, along with publications I will submit to. I have included a drop down column where I can update the status of the articles — outlined, draft, written, edited, submitted, published.

I then entered these articles into Asana with due dates for each part. If you haven’t heard of Asana you are missing out! It is an amazing project management tool that I would be completely lost without.

The next thing I have done to ensure I will succeed with this challenge is to time block.

Each week I have blocked out time in my planner to work on Medium articles and every morning I have blocked out 30 minutes to read, comment and interact with other writers on Medium.

And finally, I have already outlined most of the 20 articles. This means I have already got a kick-start and hopefully won’t be scrambling to complete articles in the timeframe of the challenge.

With my spreadsheet, planner and blocked time I am sure I will smash out this challenge!

Final Thoughts

I have some time off work, so this month is the perfect time to challenge myself on Medium again. I have my spreadsheet and Asana. I have my planner with blocked time to dedicate to Medium. I have my goals and pledge post. Now I just need to put in the hard yards.

Come follow along with me as I complete a third challenge for this year! I will post submissions below….like an accountability partner!
