An Analysis of My Articles Which Generated More Than 50,000 Views

Be curious, create guides, and tell good stories.

In this article, I will share an overview and analysis of my top 8 most viewed articles. Each of these articles received at least 1K views. They collectively generated close to 50K views and they made more than $120. But, first things first…

Six Biggest Lessons on My Medium Journey

I have recently shared a reflective article on the six biggest lessons I have learned after writing 222 articles on Medium.

  • In praise of persistence: Hang in there.
  • In praise of showing up: Achieve tiny goals every day.
  • In praise of hard work: Keep writing and publishing.
  • In praise of authenticity: Find your own voice.
  • In praise of curiosity: Astonish and amaze yourself.
  • In praise of the journey: Play the long game.

You can read these lessons here:

A Small Update on My Journey on Medium

Currently, I have 704 followers. My monthly page views have reached 15K, and my monthly earnings have reached $59.05. All of my metrics are rising slowly, but consistently.

One of my articles, the review of the “Ethos” series, has become viral for the first time:

This was totally unexpected. The great majority of my articles did not have much traction, so I was surprised. I looked to if there were any other articles I have written that have got more than 1000 views. Below are the results of my analysis.

An Analysis of My Articles Which Generated More Than 1000 Views

I have realized that 7 other articles I have published received more than 1K views. Cumulatively, these 8 articles made more than $120, which forms up a significant portion of my earnings on Medium.

The trouble is, you can almost never guess which articles will gain traction. I would have never guessed that these would be the articles that would generate the most interest. As a writer, you are pretty clueless when it comes to guessing the traction of your articles, so you need to keep writing and publish a large number of articles.

I am providing links to these articles below so that you can see which titles generated the most interest. Each of these articles is unique in its own way, so it is difficult to come up with any patterns. Do you see any patterns below?

Below are the top 3 lessons that I have learned as a result of this analysis.

1. Write about the topics that make you curious

What I first realized is that four of these articles are about futuristic topics and new technologies. Whenever I become curious about these technologies and write about the future, these articles seem to generate a lot of interest:

Take-aways:

  • Follow your curiosities, passions, and interests.
  • Go to places you have never been to before.
  • Read widely and beyond disciplines to generate insights about the future.

2. Write guides on how to achieve something

I have found out that some of my best-performing articles are actually mini-guides showing readers how to achieve something step by step.

One of my top-performing articles is a “How to” article guiding readers on how to create their vision boards. This article has got so much traction that I have been surprised:

Another similar article I have written is on how to apply Gibbs cycle of reflection:

Take-aways:

  • Share your own experiences and inspire the reader to take action.
  • Write clearly on how to create something new or how to achieve something step by step.
  • Build on your own experience, offer detailed advice, and inspire action.

3. Write inspiring stories about success and creativity

One of my most successful articles is the story of Pinblock on Shark Tank. Why did this piece generate so much interest? I think it is about storytelling — the story of Pinblock is arresting and it immediately captures interest. Shark Tank is also an extremely popular show on business, investments, and entrepreneurship, which explains some of the additional views on this article:

The last article is about the success story of BTS; which has garnered a couple of thousands of views. I think anything about BTS evokes a lot of interest as there are almost a billion Army members out there who are passionate about the most successful band of our times:

One of the most inspirational success stories I have written is about the remarkable career of Robert Lang, below. This article is yet to catch up on others in generating views and interest:

Take-aways:

  • Share success stories of individuals or teams who inspire you.
  • Analyze how they have pursued their passions and achieved remarkable success.
  • Provide actionable suggestions building on the secrets and habits of exemplary people.
  • Derive inspirational lessons for creativity and self-making.

I have written many other interesting articles, but they have not yet generated 1K views. However, this might change, as there are many articles that currently have 800 or 900 views.

You need to give yourself enough time — your articles need a long time to garner interest. Building your audience often requires much more time than you realize. So, you need to be patient and take a long-term perspective.

I will be sharing more lessons on my best-performing articles in the upcoming months.
