Amazon Games Create a Lord of the Rings MMO
After the unsuccessful LOTR MMO project with Leyou, Amazon is trying again with their own internally developed game.

If you’ve been following my previous stories, you know I’ve talked about MMORPGs a bunch. If you missed them, no worries, I’ll drop the links at the end of this post.
But today, let’s dive into Amazon Games’ journey with Lord of the Rings and their MMOs. Oh, and hold onto your seats because we’re gonna chat about their upcoming LOTR MMO too!
Is Amazon making another MMO?
Alright, buckle up because I’ve got some exciting news about the upcoming Lord of the Rings MMO from Amazon Games Orange County, the awesome team behind New World. Get ready to embark on a brand new adventure in the land of Middle-earth!
Now, here’s the deal. Amazon Games is being a bit mysterious about the whole thing, keeping their cards close to their chest. All they’ve confirmed so far is that this is gonna be a massive “AAA” title and it’s still in the early stages of development. But guess what? The game is gonna be available on both PC and consoles. How cool is that?
Christoph Hartmann, the VP of Amazon Games, expressed his excitement and gratitude, saying the following:
“We’ve always dreamt of giving players a fresh and unique experience in The Lord of the Rings universe. And now, we’re thrilled that Middle-earth Enterprises has trusted us with this iconic world.”
Talk about an honor, right?
Now, let’s talk partnerships. Amazon Games is no stranger to teaming up with awesome folks in the gaming industry. They’re also collaborating with Embracer on a new Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics. But that’s not all.
They’ve got a whole lineup of exciting projects in the works. We’re talking Throne and Liberty with NCSoft, Blue Protocol with Bandai Namco, and even unannounced games from Glowmade and Disruptive Games. Amazon Games is on a roll!
Rich Lawrence, the director of Amazon Games Orange County, had some pretty inspiring words to share. He said the following:
“When a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan picks up this game and starts playing, they should feel like it was crafted by people who truly lived and breathed Middle-earth, just like they do in their imaginations. We get it.”
That’s the kind of passion and dedication that’s gonna make this game something truly special.
Oh, and here’s a fun tidbit. The same talented team that worked on Amazon’s New World MMO is behind this Lord of the Rings MMO. And Amazon is confident that this experience will work to their advantage.
After all, New World had those epic multiplayer battles, and as any Lord of the Rings fan knows, Middle-earth is no stranger to massive conflicts. Amazon Games is tapping into their expertise and proficiency in creating those grand-scale battles to bring the world of Middle-earth to life like never before.
But wait, there’s more! Amazon Games plans to take things to the next level with their Azoth Engine. If you’re unfamiliarwith that, it’s the powerful technology behind New World. But here’s the exciting part: they’re gonna evolve and enhance that engine specifically for this Lord of the Rings MMO.
They want to create an experience that feels distinct and fitting for the world of Middle-earth. Trust me, they’ve got some big plans up their sleeves and are ready to unlock a whole new realm of possibilities.
Amazon Games Orange County is leading the charge to bring us an unforgettable Lord of the Rings MMO adventure. With their passion, dedication, and expertise, we’re in for a treat. Stay tuned for more details and get ready to dive into the fantastical world of Middle-earth like never before. It’s gonna be epic!
What happened with Amazon’s first LOTR game?
Let’s talk about the wild rollercoaster ride that Amazon Games went on with their Lord of the Rings MMO. So, picture this: they were working their tails off for years, partnering up with Chinese game developer Leyou and Middle-earth Enterprises to bring this epic game to life.
And let me tell you, there was a whole lot of buzz and excitement surrounding it. Fans were eagerly waiting for their chance to dive into the fantastical world of Middle-earth.
But then, out of the blue, disaster struck. In 2021, the whole project was suddenly canceled, leaving everyone stunned and confused. People were scratching their heads, wondering how something that seemed so promising could fall apart so quickly. It was like a sudden thunderstorm on a sunny day, completely catching everyone off guard.
According to Hartmann, the bigwig at Amazon Games, the whole thing went downhill when Leyou was snatched up by Tencent. Talk about complications. It got messy really fast. And in the face of all that chaos, Amazon Games made the tough call to just cut their ties with Leyou and move on.
It was a tough pill to swallow because they had high hopes for working together. Hartmann even mentioned that he thought it would have been awesome to collaborate with Leyou. But alas, sometimes life throws curveballs, and this was definitely one of them.
Now, here’s where things get really interesting. You know Middle-earth Enterprises, the cool cats who hold the rights to all things related to the Lord of the Rings universe? Well, they had a clever little clause in their contract.
It said that if one of their partners got acquired, they had the power to terminate the rights deal. And guess what? When Tencent swooped in and bought Leyou, Middle-earth Enterprises played their trump card and exercised that option. Boom! Everything came to a screeching halt.
But wait, here’s the twist. When Amazon Games made the big announcement about their shiny new Lord of the Rings MMO, they conveniently forgot to mention a single word about their previous attempt. It’s like they swept it under the rug, hoping no one would notice. Sneaky, right?
Final Words
So there you have it. Amazon Games’ rocky journey with the Lord of the Rings MMO.
It started with so much promise, hit a major roadblock, and now they’re back on their feet, ready to give it another shot.
Let’s hope this time they can overcome all the hurdles and deliver the epic gaming experience we’ve all been waiting for. Fingers crossed!
