About Me — Nick Marmolejo
Don’t Panic. Affirm, celebrate, and support.

I am a father, writer, marathoner, and teacher. Each title uniquely describes my experiences, and I especially enjoy looking for patterns between these roles. I believe these moments open a window where people can be brought together.
My son nearly died at birth. I realized that everything I did from that point forward would start and end with him in mind. So, thank you for reading about our wonderful way of life.
Where I Come From
Rather than describe my background in a typical fashion, I will gladly share by stating, “ I am from…” statements. I hope you’re able to relate with one or more of these:
- I am from Lubbock, Texas. Home to Buddy Holly and the largest cotton producers in the world.
- I am from being raised by a single mother and three older sisters. Our house was loud, and I’m proud of it.
- I am from very few childhood pictures.
- I am from a family that eats tamales on Christmas.
- I am from a house most vulnerable, not to strangers, but to my uncle, who broke in and stole from us.
- I am from winning Teacher of the Year (shameless plug) at my school in a previous school district.
- As a kid, I come from having a love/hate relationship with school based on the relationship I had with teachers.
- I am an expert pizza maker, tortilla roller, and cake baker. If it rises, I know how to make it from scratch.
- I am from receiving free and reduced lunch as a kid.
- I am from completing 13 full marathons, a few half marathons, and many 5ks.
- I am from cops harassing me at 10 years old to having a best friend who works in criminal justice (and I’m very proud of him).
- I am from loving Tupac Shakur so much that I regularly perform karaoke rap when a mic is present.
- I come from being raised to hold doors open for others, and a simple thank you when a door is held for you.
- I am from Seattle, Washington, where my family and I have called home for several years.

What I Write About
I host a blog called Rice & Beans, where I dig into parenting, teaching, writing, and running. I’m fueled by my passion to accurately represent the experiences of POC. So, if you stumble across my articles, you can expect to hear the perspective of a Latino man doing his best in life.
- Parenting — I have a nearly three-year-old son. Some might feel I have limited experience in this arena, but the truth is, being an expert parent is subjective. I can say that I’ve been around children my entire life through my family and career. Being a dad has been a lifelong dream of mine, so I love doing it, and I learn quickly. Let me teach you how to avoid being peed on by your son and the proven methods of raising a well-balanced child.
- Marathon Running — What can I say? I enjoy running for many reasons, and I’ve learned lessons along the way. Allow me to share my successes and often, miserable failures with you. I can’t guarantee you’ll wake up wanting to run your first marathon, but I can make you laugh or cringe if that’s your cup of tea. And who knows, you may even improve your personal bests.
- Education — Kids are the best; adults not so much. I grew up in a poor education system, taught at a Title 1 school, substituted at my childhood elementary, and now teach at one of Washington's best schools. I’ll share with you an insider view of our systemically racist and failing school system. And, I promise to take you down memory lane (with an eye toward the future). All credit goes to my students who continue to blossom into unique human beings.
- Writing — I’d venture to say this is why most of us are here. Allow me to share the feedback I hear from publishers and readers. I’ll also provide best practices and tips to writers. The goal is to elevate as many fellow writers as possible while I continue to improve as well.
I want readers to feel an emphasis on “Don’t Panic”. It’s the idea that maintaining composure in life increases confidence in yourself and those trusting in you. In other words, fake it till you make it. It’s a great mind hack that can carry you far, and I want to show you how to master it.
Medium Goals
My goals are to become a better writer, accumulate my articles, and finally publish a parenting book for brown parents. That’s it!
If you want to connect or read my previously published articles, I’d also love to hear your story.
You can follow me on Medium and Instagram or email [email protected] for business inquiries.
I can’t wait to hear from you!
