About Me — Joyce Chuinkam
I’m a black female rugby player turned body builder turned writer and my first boss was Barack Obama.

Here are 30 things about me that might give you context for my writing.
- I’m a recovering perfectionist and people-pleaser.
- I lived in Cameroon, where my parents are from, for 8 years.
- I have not lived at home since I was 11 — I went to boarding school.
- I won a poetry competition and had my first poem published at 12.
- I started college (Penn State) at 16.
- I did an exchange at Oxford to study Politics Philosophy & Economics.
- I have a dual Masters from the London School of Economics and the University of Southern California.
- I didn’t play any sports growing up then discovered rugby after college.
- Both my LSE and USC teams made it to their division championships the year I played (coincidence? I think not).
- My first job after undergrad was working on the Obama campaign.
- Every year for my birthday, I travel to a country I’ve never been to.
- I’ve visited about 20 countries.
- Living in LA for 7 years is the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere.
- My family is my rock, anchor, foundation, first love, board of trustees, comedy club, support group, fan club, all things — what hair was to Samson.
- I probably have an equal number of male and female friends.
- People say I remind them of Issa Rae — mostly the shambles in my life tend to align with what her characters face on both Awkward Black Girl and Insecure.
- (Many) people say my personality reminds them of Zoe Deschanel's character on New Girl or Mindy Kailing’s character on The Mindy Project.
- People say I remind them (physically) of Chrisette Michelle, Viola Davis, Alfre Woodard, Danai Gurira, and Michaela Coel. At this point, I think people just name short-haired dark skin women because I look like none of the above.
- I love Abbott Elementary, Everybody Hates Chris, and The Office though I believe the best show in the history of life (past, present, and future) was The Wire.
- I competed in a bodybuilding show in 2019.
- I do not believe in organized religion; I am deeply spiritual.
- I do complete a daily devotional every morning — there are practices from organized religion that still nurture my soul.
- Apparently, I go on more dates than the average person; I would rather never have to go on a first date again.
- I date myself the most — on Tuesday, I took myself to see The Book of Mormon, and on Friday we (me, myself, and I) went to Burke Williams Spa.
- I’m a Cancer and feel all the feels with my whole heart.
- As a Cancer, apparently, I have a toxic level of loyalty — I put the die in ride or die.
- My mom once told me (probably during an episode of being a spoiled brat in my youth)“If we walk outside and there’s a limo, we get in the limo. If we have to catch the bus, we get on the bus.” I maintain this mindset to get through the impermanence of life.
- I wholeheartedly believe everyone needs therapy or some kind of deep inner work to live in their purpose — most never get it.
- I don’t have many secrets, but the few I do have are coming to the grave with me — or for a small fee, they could be yours to keep … name your price.
- My goal in life is to inspire connections and spiritual awakenings through stories (hence my writing + career in qualitative research).
- My aspiration in life is to be a conduit of God’s love.
