A Tale of Halloween and Family
Snapshots into Halloween pasts, present, and even future…
Our first Halloween.
You were barely a month old; I was still so new to motherhood and every second felt like you were in imminent danger. We dressed up as superheroes, but my worst fear came to life that night. Ironic, considering it was Halloween. If there was a witch out there, I swear she was cursing me for some slight I had unknowingly bestowed upon her.
There was an accident and we had to take you to A&E. Daddy was inconsolable and scared out of his mind. I wasn’t any better. It felt like a horrible nightmare. But everything was fine, you were okay, and we made it out of the woods. But I can still remember the way my heart raced, and my stomach twisted with worry.
To say that wasn’t our best Halloween ever is an understatement. It was, however, our scariest and not one we’ll likely forget anytime soon.
Our second Halloween
Thankfully it was scary for all the right reasons this time. Spooky décor around our home, and some tasty treats stored away for trick-and-treaters that we hadn’t been home to greet last time.
You were dressed as a little black cat and my god, you were adorable. Mummy and Daddy dressed up as well. Mummy was Harley Quinn in a sequinned skirt and baseball shirt and Daddy wore a Riddler hoodie. We visited Nana and had a much better time of it than last year. I took so many photos that you’ll probably face-palm when you’re older and ask, ‘Why mum, why?’
After our first horrific Halloween, I wanted to remember our second one more and the better memories that came with it.
This Halloween
We’re going to learn how to carve pumpkins together! Daddy did it growing up, but mummy’s never done it before, so we’ll have to learn from dad. He’s going to carve a Peppa Pig pumpkin just for you because he knows how much you love Peppa. Hopefully, it will help him win that Pumpkin contest they have going on in his office. I might even see if I have some LED lights left from our wedding to light it up with!
We’ll do some coloring, and we’ll make sure to dress up and visit Nana. Hopefully, if we get there early enough, there might be some sweets left!
Halloween Years From Now
Of course, I can’t see into the future, I’m not clairvoyant nor am I an oracle. But I do like to think I have a nice vision of what it might look like. While Daddy is hard at work, you and I do some baking in the kitchen. We make lots of yummy spooky cupcakes and biscuits, ‘taste testing’ so many that we can’t manage to eat our tea later.
We’ll hang the decorations up together; I’ll be following your strict instructions of course. I’m not sure what your interests will be years from now, maybe not Peppa Pig anymore but you’ll dress as whatever you want, and mummy and daddy will surely come up with some cool costume ideas as well.
We’ll take you out trick or treating and now that you’re old enough, you’ll be able to enjoy most of your sweets. You might have to share with daddy though, you know he’s got a killer sweet tooth, and we wouldn’t want you to be sick from eating too many, right?
By then, we’ll probably be pumpkin pros and etching the best creepy smiles. We’ll be getting into our pajamas later and settling in to watch Hocus Pocus and maybe the sequel if we’re not too tired. Then again, the third one might be out by that point so it might be a full marathon evening!
No matter what year it is or how old you are, whether it’s Halloween or Christmas, we’ll always make time to spend with you as a family. You’ll always be the heart and soul of us and make every occasion a special one.
This is written as part of the Halloween challenge from Soul Magazine. It’s some snapshots into our family life at Halloween and written as though I’m telling it to my daughter. In my head I am.
