The prisoner smirks, accepting the drink the second time you offer. He takes a few large gulps, and then a coughing fit takes hold, echoing through the room.
Your chest constricts as you jump up — breath coming in quick gasps.
You search the altar for something to help, but you can only distinguish the vials by the vibrant colors of liquid inside.
“My fault.” He waves, chains rattling. “Went down the wrong tube.” His eyes soften when his gaze meets yours. “My name’s Alaric.”
After exchanging pleasantries, Alaric presses his lips into a thin line. “So… can I trust you?”
