A Few ‘CYOA’ Stories to Adopt

Stories in need of some love and attention

“Adopt me!” Image by the author using MidJourney.

Hi all! If you are stumbling across this and are totally new to ‘Choose your own’ fiction stories on Medium, check out this piece for an explainer:

We have, at the time of writing, 14 different story arcs at this publication (not counting MAL), each with multiple sub-branches. Some of the longer collaborative stories (e.g. Seek and Avenge) stretch to over 100 chapters!

However, others have languished, often because their original authors had other commitments and couldn’t take them forward.

But hey — this publication is a collaboration!

Therefore, there’s always the option for new writers to pick up and adopt one of the existing stories. A good example of this is how the beginning of Through the Black Door was written by Novus Grey, and the ending by Sieran Lane.

The following stories are similarly in need of new creative talent — one or more authors — to develop and complete them.

In order of first chapter published…

Story Arc 2: The Doctor and the Fairy

Here, we follow the tale of a man who finds himself in prison after his family are killed, but things soon take a surprising turn as he finds himself in a magical land, where a LitRPG adventure commences. Chapter 1 by Samuel Kenneth Kauffman.

(First Chapter: May 29, 2022. Chapters written so far: 3)

Story Arc 6: His Only Solace…

Our first arc written in the 3rd person, it has some dark themes, with a child terrified and hiding from a person named only as ‘HE’. Chapter 1 by Kathy K.

(First Chapter: July 7, 2022. Chapters written so far: 1)

Story Arc 7: Beyond the Eternal Forest

This arc is unusual in that it didn’t have a true first chapter, but rather emerged as a side-path from ‘Castle of Shadows’. But we soon find ourselves in a setting and story with a very different tone — magical and surreal. First chapter by Jonathon Sawyer.

(First Chapter: September 1, 2022. Chapters written so far: 5)

‘Drabble’ Arc 4: Boundless Luck

In this story, the flip-side of ‘Until Luck Runs Out’, the main character can’t fail. It’s a fantasy setting, and no matter how much the danger or how idiotic their choices, the toast of life always seems to land butter side up! There have actually been quite a few chapters of this story, including several by me, but nothing since January. First chapter by Bradan Writes Stories.

(First Chapter: October 30, 2022. Chapters written so far: approx 30).

Story Arc 8: Guardian of the Tiny Watermill

Born from a visual prompt by Jay C Wells, this charming chapter begins with a family scene between some unspecified tiny species (fairies?), followed by the protagonist, Buttercup, and featuring a seagull named Scraps. Buttercup dives into the water, and their adventure begins. First chapter by Kathy K.

(First Chapter: January 20, 2023. Chapters written so far: 1)

Story Arc 10: The Night it Happened

The most recent of our full-length CYOA story arcs, this follows the story of John, a man whose ship is wrecked, leading to deadly adventures on a mysterious island. It hasn’t had much time to build yet, but it would be great to see someone else add a chapter! First chapter by Robert Ralph.

(First Chapter: March 19, 2023. Chapters written so far: 4)

I hope you find something to intrigue and inspire you!
