A Day at the Museum
The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a Must-See

After an exhilarating breakfast with the most amazing people, we decided to visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. We have been there many times, but it keeps surprising us with something new.
On this day, we decided to walk the trail and visit the mountain lion. Of course, there is no direct path to the hiking trail. We had to see many of their exhibits along the way. There are specialty gardens throughout the museum grounds. I like the gardens that attract bees, butterflies, and bats.

The hummingbird aviary is a delight with a large variety of hummingbird species. It is enclosed but allows free flight. Watching the visitors is almost as much fun as watching the birds. Some visitors need help finding a single hummingbird. Others point in all directions, with faces beaming with wonder and awe.
It was a warm day, so the big cat and the bear were in the caves to escape from the sun. Other large animals were visible in their habitats, but they were sleeping. We did find the elusive javelinas or peccaries sleeping under the palo verde trees.

We turned the corner and were greeted with the lovely purple blooms in the first photo. We turned to another path and found this delightful plant with yellow blossoms. The leaves felt like velvet, and the flowers attracted many bees intent on gathering the pollen or nectar while it was still fresh.

Discover the wonders of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a delightful destination for families and nature enthusiasts. Nestled in the outskirts of Tucson, this museum offers a unique blend of indoor and outdoor exhibits that celebrate the diverse wildlife and geology of the desert.
Step inside to encounter an array of desert dwellers — from sleek reptiles and intriguing invertebrates to elusive amphibians. Explore our interactive center with a captivating cave exhibit showcasing an impressive collection of minerals and gems.
Venture outdoors to find a world teeming with life. Observe desert cats in their natural habitat, watch riparian creatures by the water, and marvel at the variety of birds. A highlight of your visit will be the Raptor Free Flight Show, a daily spectacle where birds of prey soar against the backdrop of the desert sky.
Plan to spend an entire day, or even more, to fully immerse yourself in all the museum offers. Take a break at our on-site restaurants, browse unique finds in our gift shops, and soak in the beauty of desert-inspired artwork in our art gallery. Throughout your visit, engage in informal presentations by our knowledgeable staff, who bring the stories of our wildlife to life.
