SPRING REPORT WEEK 8

A Black Swan and an intrepid Crow near Heron city

A break from flowers to feature three species of birds as they enjoy the beginning of the spring by the shore of the lake.

Every end of March, herons arrive to the exact same trees of a nearby park by the lake, and stay all March in their nests up their. This time, I chased them and other birds with my camera! Including… the first black swan I’ve ever seen!

Heron city in the trees

I like herons in that when I see one and intend to get close to it, it will stand still like thinking “If I don’t move, this guy can’t see me”.

Every end of winter herons arrive in the same exact group of 4–5 trees in a forest near the lake. They have built a hell of a city up there around some 30–40 m high. In the next shots, you get to appreciate how many nests they have built…

This and all other shots by author Luciano Abriata.

I tried to zoom into these nests to capture the birds. It was hard to make focus on them instead of focusing on the branches, but I managed to get some decent shots:

An intrepid crow challenges the coming storm

Crows are so smart. Including this one that stayed up having dinner by the lake until the very last moment, when it started raining and it flew away. While I got all wet…!

The black swan

Do you remember this photo from my story “Nightly build” where something like a black swan showed up? It was dark so I thought it could be some weird effect of the light. Or maybe it was just a young adult that was still grey on its way to white.

But, guess what? It was a true black swan. Or that’s what I think, at least. The first black swan I’ve ever seen.

Here it is, swimming in the mouth of a small river:

And here next to a white swan and some ducks:

And there the friends go:

Here’s the WikiPedia entry about black swans:
