I write a lot about the dark night of the soul because I know how lost we feel when we’re going through such a transformative, yet painful experience.

I know how uncomfortable it is to face your shadow. I know how difficult it is to realize you no longer relate to most of your friends and family. I know terrifying it is to not know when your dark night will be over.

One thing I know for sure: You’re not crazy. And you’re not alone.

Here are 5 reminders if you’re going through a dark night of the soul.

1. Your healing journey is not in vain.

During a dark night of the soul, we often think “what is the purpose behind this?”. We feel lost, hopeless, and powerless.

These thoughts come from your ego — the part of you that dislikes change and wants you to stay as “safe” as possible.

The truth is, your healing journey is not in vain. There’s a deep, beautiful purpose behind it: help you take your power back and reconnect with your true self. This involves incredible amounts of faith, courage and resilience — and it’s certainly not in vain.

2. Everything is temporary.

Literally, everything in life is temporary. Thoughts, emotions, life stages, people, relationships. Everything.

This means that your dark night of the soul is not going to last forever, even if it feels like it now. It’s just a temporary phase you need to go through in order to become who you’re meant to be.

So remind yourself that this too shall pass — and that this is for your highest good. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel and that light is just around the corner.

3. The more you resist it, the worse it gets.

A dark night of the soul only happens when there are lessons to be learned. The more you resist these lessons, the worse it gets.

Unfortunately, more often than not, we resist the lessons the Universe is trying to teach us. We’re so attached to our plans that we don’t realize there are much better options out there.

I know you feel like you’re losing your sense of direction, but that’s actually a good thing — because the direction you were headed was not really yours. All the goals and plans you had were simply the results of many external forces that you no longer need in your life.

4. You become what you consume.

A dark night is all about transformation. And here’s the truth: to become the person you want to be, you have to consume the right content.

We become what we consume, in all forms. What we eat and drink, watch, listen to, read, and who we hang around. That’s why it’s crucial to be mindful of what you put into your body — mentally, spiritually, and physically.

“Most people don’t acknowledge the importance of being aware of our trauma and emotional triggers, let alone the importance of healing our wounds and letting go of our conditioning. This is why it’s critical to feed your soul with content that doesn’t make you feel like a lunatic.

Read spiritual books, watch your favorite movies and connect with like-minded individuals (maybe through Facebook groups or YouTube videos) that have also experienced their own dark night and understand what you’re going through. Use this time to learn about yourself and the world as much as possible.”

5. You have unlimited potential.

The more you surrender to the transformation you’re experiencing, the more you realize you have unlimited potential.

Dreams that once were unachievable now begin to look attainable. Goals that once were mere fantasies now make you feel excited about what’s coming.

A dark night of the soul is the best time for you to embody the idea that there’s nothing you can’t achieve with time, focus and dedication — especially when you’re aligned with your real purpose.

Everything you need is already within you.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from my dark night of the soul was that the more we surrender to the void we’re experiencing, the easier it is for us to fill that void with actions and intentions that truly make us happy.

Not the intentions of your family. Not the intentions of your friends. Not the intentions of the society we live in.
